I'm in the same boat as the OP, I just don't have much money right now or the foreseeable future. I want to use it for paper punching and local tactical matches.
I am taking a serious look at the Leupold vx-Hog, looks good for the price

Now that you mention Leupold, I'm wondering if the VX-1 Shotgun/muzzleloader 1-4X20mm might be the way to go. I like the Turkey Plex reticule.

Burris has a Fullfield Tac 30 for about $299 at most places. It is the same scope internally as the MTAC but it has the older push button illumination and the older style body and turret caps.

I have been looking at that also. I decided not to go with the Leatherwood.

It has target adjustable turrets and a lighted circle reticle that suppose to work great on 1X for CQB. Looks like it retails for around $599.00 but I'm sure one could be found for less.
If you cannot afford this one, the MTAC would be my next choice. But you could have a tin can on there without the right mount. I went with the XTR and Larue Tactical SPR-E, I wish I would have bought the Vortex now.

I'm a red dot guy myself, but the Vortex has got me thinking of switching one of my ARs to a 1-4. I own a Vortex 3X magnifier and the glass is great, a lot better than I was expecting. I heard they were making the Viper PST in 1-6 also.

I think I am going Weaver Classic Extreme 1.5x4.5-24 or Leupold VX-Hog. What the Weaver's got going for it is the illuminated recticle and Natchez has them within the wife's price range.

Out of curiosity which reticle do you like on the Weaver, the Dual-X or German #4?

I was looking at the German originally but I'm starting to like the Dual x.

I vote for the Burris MTAC 1-4x.

For background, I've had the Burris FF TAC30 1-4x for a while and have been mostly happy with it, except the control over illumination. The MTAC fixes that with a much more useful dial. I've looked through the MTAC 1-4x at a recent match and it was definitely at least as good as the TAC30 - basically the same optics but with better controls, as far as I can tell.

I also have an MTAC 1.5-6x40 so I'm quite familiar with the controls.

I briefly owned the Nikon M-223 1-4x20 and did not like it. I thought the glass wasn't very good, especially compared to the TAC30. I sold it after using it very briefly.
