I've seen people say paint and others use aluminum black.
The FSB is steel so you should use a cold bluing solution of some sort. Seems like I've read about people using high temp barbeque paint as well, though I've only done this once myself and used cold blue.
At worst the FSB will barely be visible, depending on rail length... as long as it's not white and shiny you probably won't notice it at all.

I literally just shaved the FSB on my Colt 6920MP-B today. I have a 13.8" Troy Modular Rail Forend-RX coming later this week. I did the whole thing with a Dremel and three cutting disks, plus some Birchwood Casey Permablue. It isn't pretty, but it's going to work fine.

To me, it makes more sense to try cutting your FSB before buying a low profile gas block. If you screw up shaving your FSB, well, then you're gonna have to buy a new one anyways, so you might as well give it a shot.

Ok so use permablue or aluminum black?or is a slight color variation the only difference in the two?

I have done a lot of these. I much prefer Hi Temp Engine Paint over a Blueing treatment as it offers better protection over the steel. I also prefer a bench grinder and cut off tool over a Dremel.

Great job, the high temp engine paint makes it look super clean.

You can't go wrong with a Colt 6920, but by the time you buy it and spend $200-400 on a rail and gas block, you could have already bought a Daniel Defense, BCM or something else configured the way you want from the factory.

Aluminum Black is not a good choice for a steel FSB, cut down or not.

This is correct. I'd pick up one of the new DDs way before I bought a Colt just to hack up.

Shaved FSB is still option 'A'.

That said, it may be worth taking a look at the Centurion C4 12.0 FSP Rail - really solid rail, even if it's not quite as long, and gives you the mounting options I suspect you want out of a 13" handguard, with only removal of the handguard cap and delta ring/spring.
