I see no reason that would not be treated as a rifle for federal purposes, so your barrel needs to be 16" or else it needs to be a registered SBR. I don't think the California-compliance stock changes it out of being a rifle the way it is set up.

What's legal under California law, I do not know.

Even though it the stock isn't on the buffer, it still has a "stock like protrusion" (**** ugly as it may be) and likely would warrant some ATF interest.

Short answer: No, not really. Yes and no.

Most firearm owners in California relatively know the law regarding "evil black rifles". It is sort of common sense that if a shooter on line starts to fire more than 10 rounds and is dropping mags without some form of tool, then he is most likely not compliant with CA state laws regarding assault rifles (Can not have detachable magazines and 10 round magazine restriction).

In short, here in California we have the following and more:
-magazine size restrictions to 10 rounds(the pre-Ban stuff is confusing so I won't specify here)
-assault rifle overall length in it's "shortest fire-able state"
-evil features(pistol grip, vertical grip, detachable magazine, retractable stock, flash hider, etc.)
-there are more that I can not recall off the top of my head but pretty much anything one would want on their AR is most likely illegal in CA (unless of course you have a bullet button but this is a whole different topic...)

I'd say the most difficult thing is how Law Enforcement handles AR/AKs when they come across them not at a range. There are so many laws and regulations here, that not every Officer you come across is going to know them all off hand. I'll be honest and say that I even do not know all of the laws and regulations myself and constantly have to look stuff up here and there.

Most, if not all, ranges here that are not private will have a Range master/officer(s). We do have BLM land and desert locations where people shoot. However eventually over time these spots are shutdown for safety/legal/etc. reasons. I personally stopped shooting on BLM lands after being involved with a fire related incident. I stick to Ranges or far into the desert where the only thing that can burn is one's skin from the sun.

To address the original post, that is a special "grip" attached to it. It is done because it meets the law regarding not having a pistol grip. I want to say this photo was taken at a HSP course awhile back.

Yes. Nothing about the funny stock would limit it being legal under federal law.

It is designed to be fired from the shoulder so it would need to be registered as an SBR.

To further compound on what TxRaptor wrote:

If you have greater than 10 round magazines and want to use them, you must get rid of the bullet button, have a fixed stock, no pistol grip or thumbhole stock, no flashhider, no forward pistol grip or any form of grenade or flare launcher.

It is by not having any of those "Evil Features" that you can use detachable magazines of any size you wish.

But if you'd rather have a pistol grip, flash hider, or adjustable stock then you have to use a bullet button with 10 round magazines.

I can't wait to get out of this state and be free.

    Kill it...with fire.

Seriously, if you have to go to those lengths to have an AR, just get something like a Garand and learn how to use it.

However, you cannot import, manufacture, sell, or transfer magazines with greater than 10 rd capacity in Cali, so while you CAN use a 30 rd magazine on a featureless rifle, you had to have owned that magazine before 2000.

Basically, if you don't know the law after it being in effect for 12 yrs, don't worry about it and only own 10 rd magazines.

I'm from Cali and I refuse to use an abomination like that just to be able to drop mags freely. I'll stick to an raddlock or vamfire.

Cali "featureless" AR would be a fixed or pinned stock, kydex grip wrap or monsterman, anything that covers up the pistol grip and a muzzle brake, no vfg, but on the bright side you don't need a bb or raddlock! But for me, I'll pass and keep mine looking like a real AR.
