They actually produce more than that per month and from what I have read have the capacity for 50,000 per month.
This is also not an easily found thing, if you were just looking it over it would appear fine, that is until you pick at it and it falls off. Colt's "stacking thigs carelessly" as you say is actually fine, people who buy Colt dont mind a small ding here and there, but hey I hear DPMS has great fit and finish, good luck getting a bolt to last 5,000 rounds. Also colt has filed chapter 11 only once from what I can find, that was in 1992.
Eta: before you call me a fanboy, the only Colt product I own is their copper extractor springs.

Send it to Colt and contact the manager (Brent) right after. If you get him involved, you will get the rifle back quick.
