    Tube or Quad Rail?

    Gentlemen,

I have searched(gotten quite good at it here) regarding tube vs. full quad rail. I understand the pros and cons...my question.

Which is better suited for hard use?
As in, has anybody had any problems with the attached rails falling off of their modular tubes or have a problem with heat dissipation because of the thinness of the tubes?

What I haven't found: Are rails better suited due to the little extra material and then adding rail panels for better heat protection?

Because of this website I got rid of my RRA and bought a Colt 6920. I am in the process of doing simple mods,(forend, sling, stock, light) and would like some experienced opinions. Then onto a basic class next year and hopefully IG's armorer course.

I can do the rifle but I have to pay for my wedding coming up before I can do the other two things.

The two forends I have it narrowed down to:
    Troy 13" VTAC
    Centurion Arms 12"

Everything else I have picked out and will post pics in the appropriate thread when it is done.

    Thank you for your time,
    T

P.S. Thanks for the stickies and patient replies...I cannot say how much I appreciate the knowledge that is found here. I can say I have read several stickies 3-4 times now.

Hey Telmer, either would be suited for a "hard use" situation as proven by members here who run guns with both forend types into the ground daily ......

The heat of the tubular systems can be mitigated in a number of ways if that is a concern. There are some great conversations going on with people using everything from IDF bands to header tape and the obvious gloves.

The high quality modular systems seem relatively bulletproof as they are not really a new idea and have been tweaked a quite bit. Kyle Lamb for example, has been using a system like that for years and the Troy people seem to have gotten it right ( along with Noveske and others).

Really what it all comes down to is the intended purpose of the rifle, how much railestate you need for your mission specific equipment and whether you want the extra "bulk" of a full rail system.

    Good luck!

You can't go wrong with either of those options.

For railed handguards you typically need to add covers to protect your hand and the rails themselves. Some shooters don't want any extra weight/bulk. In the grand scheme I think it's a wash.

For tubular units adding, moving, removing rail sections can be a PITA unless you take off the handguard each time.

The heat issue was addressed above. Generally for heat mitigation it's tough to beat the old school insulated handguard pieces on non-free floated rifles.

My advice is to grope the shit out of each style at a gun store and decide which you prefer. I prefer tubular but if I use a rifle with rails I don't lose any sleep over it.
Before you suggest that licensing, background checks, or other restrictions for the 2nd Amendment are reasonable... Apply those same ideas to the 1st and 4th Amendments. Then tell me how reasonable they are.

I recently made a decision between these same handguards. I had the VTAC (Alpha version) in my cart ready to check out and decided to go with the Centurion at the last minute. I'm glad I did.

By the time you add a few rail panels onto the VTAC the weight difference is fairly negligible. However, the ability to change the set up quickly and easily with the Centurion was a plus for me.

I was concerned about the heat on the VTAC as well, but haven't shot with it before so I can't comment on it. I haven't had any issues with heat from my Centurion so far though.

I don't really think you can go wrong either way though if you are considering the Alpha rail as well. I'm not a fan of how the original Troy tube rails mounted.

Haha nice catch! As much as it cost I feel like maybe that should have been included.

I'd rather eat cat shit with a knitting needle than run one of those faggotron tubes.

I personally love the looks and feel of the VTAC rail, although heat can become an issue in high round count shooting sessions. This problem is easy to overcome with gloves.

I don't think you could go wrong with either one, but the VTAC has definitely converted me over to "tube type" rails. A quad rail just seems bulky and unnecessary to me now, so beware once you go modular you might not want to go back.

Damn, you really hate them don't you. I think we already went through this on another thread. We'll convert you before it's over.
