The Vortex PST performed very well in a recent deployment in Afghanistan. Very robust indeed. The maximum brightness level could be better for the very bright days, but the reticle design with its bold ring makes up for it. The PST is a scope worth a lot more than it is priced, and should you ever have an issue, Vortex has an excellent warranty.

That being said, robustness is a major concern, and that is directly related to overall cost.

As far as speed goes, I shoot mine as fast as I shoot my Aimpoints and EoTechs from 3 to 75 meters, and faster/more precisely past that. No need for a doggy-style mini dot sight.

I personally have found a side red dot useful in certain situations.
    1. You are need to go from long to close or reverse fast. Its easier to tilt the rifle than to throw a scope power ring even with a cat tail.
    2. I have found a side red dot faster for me when I am shooting on the move.
    3. I don't run a BUIS I run a side red dot as a back up sight as well. Not saying yoru wrong just saying a off set red dot has some utility.

I've been using a Leupold "shotgun" scope with their turkey plex reticle.

    1. I think it is plenty robust enough to take a beating in the field, and shooting lots of rounds in a short amount of time. It was built for a 12 gauge.

    2. Leupold has a lifetime warranty that is awesome. I recently sent a VX-II in off of my deer rifle and had it fixed, for free, no questions asked.

    3. It is not a true 1-4x, but I can shoot both eyes open perfectly fine.

    4. I like the reticle, having the circle in the center helps [me] with faster target aquisition and getting shots off quicker and on target.

    5. Scope was $200 at opticsplanet, and is mainly used for coyote hunting and hopefully the occasional 3 gun shoot that comes around my parts.

(I'm not expert and don't claim to be, just expressing my opinion)
