    Too long or too thick?

As an aside, the old B&T mounts (with the allen not the screw) that work on my preban 550 do not work on the new JDI guns either. I had to grind off some of the post that is driven down into the rear sight base. Works great now. There are some dimensional differences between the old guns and the recent imports.

The older HALO had a longer collett and was able to be used across a wider variety of flash hiders including extended A2's, Vortex's etc.

The new HALO is for military A2 bird cage length flash hiders only it seems- and completely ruined the flexibility of the design.

Should still work by simply swapping flash hiders, had to do that with older 552s and original HALO's as well since the tuning fork flash hider was too short.

Strange, my HALO works just fine on my original 550 and 551 swat.

    Hey Steyr,

I have been digging into this. My preban 550, post ban 550, and post ban 551LB all have 2 groves along the base of the flash supressor. My 551 SB flash suppressor does not have those rings. Maybe that is why it doesn't work work on the 551sb.

I'll have the halo in the same location as the 550s here shortly. Be interesting to figure it out.

I thought that JDI was the first to import semi 551's. What's a post ban 551LB?

No, Sig USA did it in the 90s for LE. Those were later sold on the civlian market. I have one. Green, orignially with an SBR barrel. I later had it fitted with a LB thanks to JoshNC.

The commercial import 550s have circumferential hump for the grenade tensioning ring and iirc the flash hider turned to smaller outer diameter. The 16” OAL barrel 551s also have a smaller outer diameter on the flash hider. The StG90, PE90, and 551 LB barrels are all slightly larger diameter iirc than the 551 short barrels. But I don’t have any more 551 LB barrels around to measure.

I believe Gemtech sold two different adapters to accommodate different O.D. and length of various flash hiders.

Edited to add: a friend just mic’d his PE90 barrel. The flash hider is 21.74 mm O.D. I mic’d one of my 551 barrels and the flash hider is 21.49 mm.

TheAlsatian, I didn't know. Thanks for educating me.

For anyone wanting to know, the 552's that JDI will be importing will be offered with 8.9" or 11.9" barrels and will have pic rails, grey receivers and green furniture.

There are likely between 150 and 200 551-2 SBR, a handful (probably less than 50) 551-2 16” OAL, and about 90 552-2 SBR semiautos that were imported post-89 and mostly post-94 by Sigarms for LE use. This was when Sigarms was the SIG/SwissArms importer, before they jumped the shark and began making their own turd-burgled rifles. These guns were traded out to a few FFLs, one of which handled the vast majority. The SBRs had barrel extensions permanently attached, which made them title-1 guns. Of the SBR 551s, Mike Otte at Michaels Machines was the very first to perm attach a barrel extension and sell the 551s commercially as title-1 rifles. He bought all from the main dealer who sold the vast majority of the 551s and all of the 552s. Because these were all used by LE agencies, they could be sold to civilians so long as they were title-1 (no imported title-2 firearms for lowly civilians after the 68 GCA). This is analogous to how the Cali DOC HK94s, black 16” Steyr AUG-Ps, and some other interesting semiauto rifles (all imported post-89) became available for the civilian market. And the beauty of these guns that were “washed” through a PD is that 922(r) and 925(d)(3) do not apply.

Larry Gaglio imported a handful of SIG 550 Snipers, PE90s, and 551-1 LB kits complete with upper receivers back in the mid/late 90s. He also brought in PE90 barrels, complete 551 Commando (see re: DS Arms below) front ends, 552-2 diopter parts kits, 550 Sniper kits, 55x optics/mounts, mags, and 55x small parts. Oh and some interesting manuals and SIG related printed materials.

A few Swiss 55x probably also came across the border from Canada. A few such guns that I suspect to have come from Canada have popped up on Gunbroker over the years.

DS Arms imported 550 Sporters with thumbhole stock and bare muzzle for the commercial market in the 90s. They also imported 550s for LE use, some of which went to LE agencies and were later sold commercially. They listed the 550, 551, and 551 Commando (10” short barrel with gas system that appears to be identical to the Exeter 556 Pistol/patrol carbine/551a1 sbr). I’m not sure if DS Arms actually imported 551s or the 551 Commando.

Long Mountain Outfitters imported some 550s. Some went to LE agencies and were later sold commercially. Others went to dealers as complete rifles, but remained dealer/LE/gov only. And others were imported, disassembled, and the complete kit with upper receiver were sold when ATF was allowing import of receivers for rifles otherwise restricted for import under 923(d)(3) so long as the receivers were sold as “repair/replacement “ parts (same way CCF uppers were sold).

There is yet another interesting type of import where rifles were direct shipped from Switzerland to LE agencies in the US. These guns did not have an importer and therefore have no import marks. There were around 10 gray with black furniture and 10 black with black furniture 551-2 with 16” OAL barrel that have no import marks and were sold commercially. These are neat rifles. The gray have LE/gov restricted markings but no import markings. The black have no restricted or import markings. There were also some 550s and PE90s that were imported in this manner and lack import markings.
