Very interesting history and thank you JoshNC. I have one of the 551s that was imported for LE, later converted to a 551LB. Again thanks to JoshNC and Estes Adams. Another factor is JDI importing all sorts of 55x "handguns" which are later converted to long guns and it seems...quickly listed on gunbroker for a profit...

But I don’t have any more 551 LB barrels around to measure.

I believe Gemtech sold two different adapters to accommodate different O.D. and length of various flash hiders.

Edited to add: a friend just mic’d his PE90 barrel. The flash hider is 21.74 mm O.D. I mic’d one of my 551 barrels and the flash hider is 21.49 mm.
Interesting Info Josh. thanks. So does Gemtech still offer those adapters? I am trying to set up two 556 rifles for NODS. I have my 553 sorted out. DBAL and Suppressor. I want to set up either my 551 LB or 551SB sbr as well, but want to be able to suppress it.

I was even considering the sacrilege of cutting off the suppressor on the lb barrel and rethreading it.

No clue re: Gemtech, sorry. Please don’t remove the flash hider and thread your barrel.

    NODS: Night Observation Devices
DBAL: Dual Beam Aiming Laser (basically an IR laser for aiming a weapon while using head-mounted NODs).

Correct. Basically I have a 553 set up with the b&t rail. It had a dbal a3 and an AimPoint patrol with a 3 x magnifier that can switch out for the pvs14. That gives me a helmet or rifle born capability. Passive or active. I use an sdn6 and it is awesome 24/7. I want to do that with a 551 sbr, a 551 lb, or a 550. My problem is finding cans that will work. Suppression is core to the 24/7 goal.

Question on the 552 count. I remember noting from Roger at Midwest that there were only a total of 62-63 552-2SP's. I assumed that these were the semi-auto total -that were converted to title 1, and that the rest of the 121(?) imported for NC ALE were either full auto (with some cut down for parts kits) or semi auto cut down for parts kits.
Could you help with this possible discrepancy?
With the import of an additional 52 552(pistols), I'm interested in the potential total count of semi 552's.

Thanks for the other interesting information!

Semi auto SBRs were not transferable due to 1968 CGA. As such even though they were factory semi autos, they were classified as "pre 86 dealer sample" machine guns. ALL of the 552s were imported as such, Roger at Midwest did Title II conversions by adding a permanent muzzle device, some of these were then reregistered as "domestic" semi autos.

This was me recalling conversations with Roger. I may be recalling incorrectly. I don’t think I am, but I’ll hit him up and see if my number is off.

If I’m remembering correctly, I think there were only 20-30 FA 552s from NC ALE. I don’t believe any semiautos were cut into kits.

I will be forever grateful for the wake-up call concerning JDI Josh! I remember being asleep on my laurels at the time -after getting the coveted 553. Who would have thought that we would have the opportunity to own these at all. I'll adjust my counts accordingly.
Many years ago, the Swiss export laws were a lot more restrictive, right? When did they loosen up?
I'm even grateful for our own BATFE's relaxed position recently, but suspect that the one step forward will end up being 2 steps backwards in the upcoming years.
-Actually, more like one step conservative, and 2 steps liberal (right around the corner) I'm afraid.

    "Turd-burgled"!

-I guess the Swiss aren't really worried that the "turd-burgler" will ever reflect poorly on their good name.
Or we might see a Cig Arms (for Cohen) someday..
But then, did Ron ever get out of that nasty hiccup of collusion and facing jail time in Germany?!
