    Muzzle Break or Flash Hider?

    Hi Group,

I am new to the suppressor world and am researching my first one. I have an AR with a 12" barrel that I'd like to start with. I'm wondering if there is a benefit to having either a muzzle break or a flash hider for use with a suppressor. Any suggestions are welcome.

I appreciate your opinions and input.

    Thanks!

On guns with shorter barrels, a lot of people(myself included) use muzzle brakes. Reason-the brake acts as a blast baffle(if that's not the right term, someone will correct me) taking some of the force off the can's internals resulting in longer can life. The down side is its loud as hell when not using the can.

I was looking at the AAC 51T Muzzle Break or the AAC 51T Brakeout initially. There's a ton of information on suppressors and adapters out there. I'm trying to decifer it all. I figured that I'd ask the experts here. Thank you for your reply.

I have personally ran both of the mentioned muzzle devices with and without my M4-2k. I run the MB on my 10.5 guns and the Brakeout on my 14.5s. They both have done what they were designed to do. On the muzzle brake, you can tell it has taken the initial blow from the short barrel. I would also look into surefire and KAC cans as they make some really good products-cans and muzzle devices.

Brakes just suck to shoot unsuppressed on 5.56, and they get worse as the barrel gets shorter.

Cans wear out, but most shooters will never come close to shooting out even an average quality can.

I have gone back to all flash hiders, but if someone still wants a brake my suggestion is:

if the gun will be used suppressed more than half the time - Brake

if the gun will be used unsuppressed more than half the time - Hider

This will be a dedicated suppressed rifle. With the current advice, would you guys recommend one brake over another?

For dedicated, use the full brake- it has 2 "brake surfaces" versus one on the Brakeout.

JasonM's advice is dead on. He's very knowledgable, on this subject in particular. Dedicated suppressor gun meaning leaving the can on 100% of the time, you won't have to deal with the cons of running a muzzle brake.

Thanks a ton, guys. I'll look at full muzzle brakes like the SureFire SFMB-556 or AAC 51T. I'm open for suggestions.

On a side note, I looked at the Suppressor Picture thread, and I was drooling. I'm really looking forward to this new world.

Make a decision on a can first then pick your mount since you can't mount an AAC can on a Surefire brake/mount.

For AAC cans I like the Brakeout.
