A-Bolt would be a good choice in 223 plus only need to move that bolt 60 degrees.

Check out the CZ 527. Short barrel, iron sighted, and has detachable mags. Also comes in 7.62x39.

This one shows no irons but I'm almost certain they can be had with irons.

All of the Mossberg rifles that I have encountered have been good to go with 1 exception. I was spending some time at the range with a 100ATR in 30-06 and had an extractor break. Mossberg had me a new one within a couple of days with no questions asked. The 4x4's have been solid all around despite being fugly IMO.

I know a few local hunters who couldn't resist them and have had nothing but praise for them as well.

I have 3 different older bolt guns that are Mossbergs. Granted, 2 of them are 22lr and one is a 22 Magnum but they shoot fantastic, especially the 22 Mag, that thing is crazy accurate.

Are you set on a bolt gun?

a MRP in 223 with a lightweight barrel could mount a scope forward.
a VIS is monolithic enough as well.
    a URX too probably.

OR take it down a notch and save big with a saig or AK in 223 and a forward scout mount.
(though I'd only buy a high quality scope for mounting on the gas tube or near it.)

On thing I would consider is field sustainability. Parts for the Remington 700 series are widely available as is armorer/gunsmith information. Ruger M77s as well with some exceptions. Others may or may not be.

If the gun has to go back to the manufacturer for common repairs, it need not apply.

You could get a an aftermarket detach mag box for the remmy but that is $$$$

Yep I have a Tikka T3 in .223 with detach mags, and you can get 6rd mags for them. Nice thing is, these factory barrels come with a 1:8 twist so that they can stabilize the larger projectiles.

I too was looking for a similar rifle and this weekend at a gun show I discovered Savages Hog Hunter line. It comes in .223, .308, and .338. The price is right at around $400. The internal box magazine is a downside though.
