Some useful info on different caliber SBR uppers

I wrote the ATF to get some more information on different caliber uppers on a single caliber registered receiver. Please dont use this as an endgame, just thought I would share for those who are interested.

Here's my question for you. Why would you stir the ATF hornets nest when your question has already been answered numerous times and even been posted on their website. Why would you think it's necessary to get a new tax stamp when the upper is not registered? If I'm reading correctly the answer they provided you actually conflicts with what the ATF website says. That is that unless it is a permanent change or alteration, you need not notify them.

Yes, and you will not be required to again register the firearm before replacing the short barrel. ATF recommends written notification to the NFA Branch when a firearm’s configuration is permanently changed or removed from the purview of the NFA.

    This.

The existence of this letter, and the conflicting guidance it contains, is troubling.

OP, why did you do it?

Can you imagine the ridiculous inquiries the ATF must get every day?

I'd want guns out of private hands after one day of that retardation.

ATF has told my dealer as well as myself the same thing OP's letter says, contrary to their website.

    My thoughts?

They can screw you if they want to, even if it only means costing you a ton of lawyer fees. Don't act a fool and don't attract their ire and chances are, you will be fine. There are probably thousands of un-registered SBR's/SBS's that ignorant people or old codgers have made that don't cause them a bit of trouble. Would I advise it? NO! Still, the point remains, piss them off, and you're done. Just like that guy who's Olympic crapping the bed cost him several years in prison.

I remember a member here with a red nametag(IG maybe) informing me that the dude had an m16 fcg in his gun.

    1. The BATFE cannot just screw you. Their website clearly states that it must be a PERMANENT CHANGE (define that).

    2. The person you are referring to (read the online sources) show that he KNOWINGLY INSTALLED A FULL AUTO PARTS KIT into the lower and it caused the weapon to fire in bursts. As students who have been to my class have seen (the sear is not required to make a weapon go full auto). It has nothing to do with the BCG.

    3. People want to reinvent the wheel everyday rather than accept the stuff that is already out there.

Piss in the right cheerio's and your rifle can grow a FA FCG, too. Who knows? I believe you about THIS guy, but I'd rather just not rock the boat because things happen.

Please STOP writing the ATF for formal answers to this stuff. We are the ones that are going to get screwed in the end when the are forced to make some kind of decision on things which usually contradicts what is on their site.
