"if I had a choice I would have preferred that they not be on there at all"

Others have routed out a new set of handguards with a Dremel tool to fit the gas system in space. You could too, but side rails are useful for atleast a good sling attachment point using a MI or other company rail sling attachment.

If you ever want to take a class with it, run a course, take a walk to shoot a Coyote and so on, a good 2 point setup is always a nice thing to have.

For the bottom rail too you can always take it off, put a full rail on and use a vertical grip on it or just cover it up with rail covers.

I'd give the CAA FGA a look. We T&E'd them and I was pretty pleased with it, especially for the cost. We used G2 lights in them. The standard I compared it against was a TD VFG with a viking mount and Z49 switch on a G2.

Both setups allow you to keep the light in constant on or momentary and do a reasonable job against accidental light discharges. The CAA is better at this as it has a lockout switch so no risk of an accidental light discharge.

The CAA has a much slimmer profile than the viking mount on the side, although it isn't bad, just not as trim.

I am currently using a Surefire Scoutlight on my weapon here and think that would be a good choice. Although it is an LED and the light is not as bright as the standard ones with similar lumens, it does what it needs to do. It is compact, does not need bulbs and works well with a correctly mounted VFG.

Nobody is saying you are wrong for wanting to put something on your gun. The point is that what you want to do with the rifle determines what you put on those rails. Your original title was "Help me fill these rails" and not the more direct "Flashlight/VFG" you changed it to recently, there is a very different implication in your intent.

Example- Dude 1 lives in apartment complex, makes minimum wage, shoots his AR twice a year at cans at his cousin's house.

Dude 2 is active duty military, BTDT, burns through 1,000 rounds a month minimum, is willing to spend his entire paycheck on his rifle/optics/lights/grips because he will take those off of his personal weapon to stick to his work gun when he deploys.

When Dude 1 asks what light to buy, Dude 2 is literally on a different level of selection.

If Dude 1 defines his criteria, Dude 2 either makes a different recommendation or just shuts up.

Does this make Dude 2 "better" than Dude 1? No, just different.

There is also absolutely no reason not to want a light, and looking cool does not make you a bad person. Do I need my girlfriend to have 32" double D's? Nope, but I like it.

This rifle is not going to be used for anything but shooting fun and maybe to take out an occasional coyote. It looks a little bare is the only reason Im considering putting something on the gun and no I don't want to spend a huge amount of money for some thing that will be mostly for looks. I own plenty of other weapons for home defense and I don't think there are any Zombies coming anytime soon, so I don't need flashlights and lasers on my rifle. I'm just looking to dress it up a little. Sorry to offend you guys that only put necessities on your rifles. Excuse me for thinking it would look cool to have a flashlight on my rifle when I don't really need it.
There are some internet forums where your mindset is appreciated, encouraged, and even celebrated! This is not one of them.

Most of the participants here are serious about training and/or competing with serious use firearms, whether for personal/family/homestead defense or for professional use.

Hence, the response that you got to your request for "filling up space". I suspect that your post quoted above will not help things either.

I'm just a 37 year old father of three that enjoys shooting my toys with my three sons. I don't compete or do any training. I own a lot of rifles, but this is my first AR-15. I didn't realize this forum was for professionals and that my mindset would not be appreciated here. I guess I picked the wrong place to hang out.

I would suggest a Viking Tactics mount and G2 with LED head. That VT mount might keep the light nice and snug against the handguards. I've been tempted to experiment with that myself but don't want to ruin my original Colt M4s when I use railed handguards anyway...

    A big +1 here!
