Is the RRA CAR or Mid-length really that bad?

First off I am not new to the AR platform. I have two full sized Bushmaster guns I have used on and off for the last decade. One being a 20" XM15, the other a DCM match gun. I shot Highpower for a while at Camp Perry before losing interest and moving to the pistol. Not that I lost my love for the AR.

Recently I have thought about picking up a smaller version of the AR for just normal plinking and home defense. So I have been reading up on my M4 type guns. I can get a Rock River gun for a good price when I go to Camp Perry next year. I have been reading conflicting reports of the guns since looking hard at them.

I am not really interested in a flatop so I would be getting something like the A2 CAR or the A2 Mid-length with most likely the M4 stock.
    So my questions are these....

Is the Rock River really as bad a gun as some claim?

Would I be better served with the 16" A2 CAR, or the 16" Mid-length?

Would a gun such as a CAR sized gun with an A2 upper and collapsible butt stock be considered an M4A2 or just a plain carbine?

I have an Armalite AR10 A2 carbine that is just about the perfect gun. I would really like to have an 5.56 version and the Rock River is the easiest for me to get as I would not have to special order one. I can just pick it up directly from them at a price that is cheaper than a dealer price. This year they had the National Match guns for just 1050.00.

If you want irons and like the sight radius, maybe you should consider a mid length Dissapator from Palmetto State? Get a flat top and run a carry handle, or swap on a A2 upper later on.

That gives you the longer sight radius and handguard you are used to as well as a 16" barrel.

You can get a Palmetto cheaper than $1050 so that will free up money for a sling or ammo, or both.

    Early pic of mine:

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index...tor-rifle.html Sell the MOE stock, handguard, and rear sight and that will easily pay for a used or even new carry handle. hell, call them up and see if you can get it with regular A2 handguards, and M4 stock, and a carry handle and see if it can be had cheaper than $800.

I'm new here myself, but you'll find that most on this board demand rifles that can withstand "hard use." Most would say that RRA does not qualify. Colt and others offer better products at a similar price, so most would steer you in that direction. Lots of threads on this. Here is an informative one.

I am new to the gun world, with my first purchase 2 months ago. I choose the RRA Operator. I have put 1200 rounds through it. I have had a single jam, where a brass round had a small bend in the round that I missed when loading the magazine. Other than that single round the rifle has performed great. I am shooting 3 inch groups at 100 yards with iron sights and my vortex red dot. I am shooting 6 to 8 inch groups at 200 yrds. I realize I will get better as I learn weapon control.

Aside from the one twd linked, here are a couple more, and, even more within the second.

Bottomline is, with the availability top quality ones at comparable prices, why bother.
In your case, I would look at either a Colt 6920 or 6720. I know these are flat tops but you can always use carry handles on them.

Thanks guys you have given me a lot to pour though.

I never really though about going with something other than an A2 upper, though a flat top with a carry handle makes a ton of sense. I really to like the sights on an A2 gun and tend to shy away from electronic this or that. I can see the flat top being the best of both worlds.

I am in the research phase now and can't really buy one yet. I am still paying on several fun guns now.

In the words of one rather famous instructor....."if RRA came with a blowjob, I still wouldn't buy one". That pretty much sums it up. The instructor teaches at EAG tactical.

    Simply,
...you can do better for the same or similar money

Plinking and Self Defense are total different intended purposes and should drive the purchase significantly

No sense in getting something that has mixed reviews when there are plenty of choices with a great reputation, that sums up my feelings on RRA (and I bought one of their uppers before I knew better)

On top of the RRAs I have personally SEEN run like complete shit and choke on steel cased cheap stuff, unstaked castlenuts and a joke of a gas key stake job, ridiculous upper recievers that put a "Tactical" rail at a height thats impossible to get any kind of co-witness with ANY optic.....

The "Half Quad" rails are front heavy and look ridiculous to boot...

The mediocre parts and materials are at a price right up there with top tier manufacturers but just cant hang in there with a substantial round count.
