    DPMS TAC2 what the ????

I recently read a review of the new DPMS TAC 2, and it seems to go against every thing I thought was right. 1st of all it's DPMS, but lets look past that for a second. A 16" barrel with a rifle length gas system? It would have to be a smooth shooter when it did function but that's my question, how reliable could a setup like this be?
It does have a nice looking modular rail though (if it wasn't DPMS). The gas block sits 3 inches from the muzzle for any one who has yet to catch a glimpse of it. DWELL time! I'm guessing they pull this off with a larger gas port? They claim the barrel is 4150 steel. I first thought dissapater but they use carbine or mid-length gas blocks with a rifle length front sight.
I would like to hear what my fellow M4C members think about this setup. Just for everyones information I would never own anything DPMS. I do like the looks though. Just curious! A seach on the site turned up nothing.

Well I personally would not trust anything DPMS is claiming in their stuff. the concept sounds different I guess but I don't know how reliable a rifle length gas system would work on a 16 inch barrel. If everything was built to spec, the gas port should be .093 for a rifle length system, hypothetically it would work, but we all know that DPMS is not capable of such attention to detail.

until I see DD, BCM, or the other quality manufacturers doing this I will continue to look the other way, do yourself a favor and stick with the correct barrel/gas system combo you prefer

DPMS or not the concept can and will work. My Colt rifle barrel was cut to 16 and ran good. Many DRMO M16a1s were cut to 16 by agencies with no port work at all. It's nothing new

So given the fact that DPMS has failed to even master the basics of building a quality AR, you want to trust an advanced version?

I agree that it could work reliably as long as it is produced by a quality manufacturer.

Local Sheriffs Office got several M16A1s years ago. There is at least one (I think they did this with two of them) that they had cut to 16 inches, re-threaded for the FH, and added a rail and carbine buffer/stock.

The one that I have messed with runs fine. The deputy shoots it quite a bit and he says it runs perfect.

It might be an okay rifle, but for that price ($1299) I would never buy it. Why would anyone when they could get a better rifle for less than that?

Why would they build it rifle length instead of midlength?

(The answer is because its DPMS)

iirc Noveske won't even do an 18" rifle length anymore. Only 20". Although I've seen two guns that were 12.5" midlength, so I'm sure this is possible, but shitty given the port size.

So 16" seems like a bad idea.

edit: after looking at it, is anyone sure it's not a dissipator setup?
