Just curious. Sorry for the highjack.
No, Crome is thicker than the rised burrs and edges. I'm talking microscopic imperfections, and cut and button rifled a going to have way more than cold forged btw.

It was explained to me that you can make a good barrel very tough be nitrocarburizing, and you could ruin a great barrel with the same process by not doing it right. We talked about it as a later option, but only for barrels that had 200-500 rounds down them, then lapped, and immaculately cleaned, but then, throat erosion is still the biggest issue they are seeing for barrel life, and melonite barrels still have throat erosion so, it's really sort of what you're looking to get out of the barrel.

They don't feel accuracy is + or - with the surface conversion, but it does seem to foul less. I'm unsure as I haven't really compared or done any testing myself. Just knowing what I know, I would NOT send a barrel to have that process done, I know what I don't know is a TON. I would trust a larger mfg to look into it and do it right, for example I suspect the AAC barrels are done right. Not sure about S&W.

Thank you all for the info on nitriding.

I am REALLY looking hard at the BCM SS410 again. It's out of stock now because I'm indecisive (it was in stock a few days ago). The 410 stainless seems that it would be rugged enough for a Florida environment.

I may even have it contoured to fit some of those ugly-looking JP cooling fins that fit under their handguard.

As for the handguard, I have settled on the Rainier Arms Evo 15". It was between that and the troy TRX alpha rail 15". I'll settle for slightly oversized OD for less heat transfer (via the Rainer's thermal bushing). Though, I have no doubt that both would serve my purposes perfectly. I also get a bigger LE discount on the Rainer.

Didn't MSTN at one point sell 17" rifle gas Noveske SS barrels?

Wes still does. In fact, his personal gun is what inspired this project of mine. However, those barrels typically went for $700 and up. They were special batches that Noveske did for MSTN per Wes's specs (which I don't have). He was not shy about telling you how expensive they were (and rightfully so, what with economies of scale not being in play for small batches). They also have quite the waiting list if Wes's Facbeook posts were accurate. 6 months, if not longer.

I can come in several hundred lower than that for the barrel, a re-contour, a cut/thread/crown, and a gas block pinning job.

Nice choice on the Evo; I have yet to hear any complaints about heat dissipation (unlike DD MFR and Troys) and I doubt you'll really need the JP heatsink. Make sure you orient the barrel nut bushings correctly (see the pics) and alternate tightening the two screws. You should be able to crank them down to completely close the gap at the bottom, and your rail will be rock solid.

I was about to suggest: forget the CL/nitrided/custom barrel and just cut down a good 18" SS. Looks like you've reached the same conclusion... if you actually shoot it out, then replace it with a custom. By then you'll know if your 17" rifle gas is really worth it.

I should note that I have really liked the Troy's and JP's I've shot without caveat. However, as you said, those bastards get HAWT. While I normally use gloves when shooting, it would be nice to not need them right after the first magazine.

I'm planning on using red loctite on the locking nuts. I'm assuming this will be fine as I'm not going to be using it for suppressive fire.

Yeah, the JP fins won't fit. No biggie.

As for the barrel, I agree that the BCM 18" will be fine. I don't wanna get ate-up with excalibur syndrome. It will serve my purposes.

I'm emailing Dave @ ADCO as a last-ditch about the Criterion 18" hybrid contour. Their concerns about the chrome lining chipping near the crown has me concerned as well. I'll let you guys know what Dave says. I obviously have time now since the BCM SS410 18" is out of stock for the time being.

    Still waiting on emails.

Meantime, if you have a Facebook account you can view this image after liking Wes's "Mid-South Tactical Network (MSTN)" page.

The concept works. I'm just going to see how far I can take it as far as gas reduction and what the trade-offs are.

Thanks all for the multiple PM's and all the helpful posts. I'll keep you all updated.

See the attachment for people without FB access. All credit for Photo goes to Wes and Mid-South Tactical Network (MSTN).
