Crtierion barrels would be a nice way to go if they would do the custom work.

Regarding FN, PK Firearms carries a variety of FN CHF barrels. View the attached link http://www.pkfirearms.com/FN_Barrels/192/c. There is an 18" Gov and HBAR barrel on the page. I don't know if the gas port has been modified from a 20", nor do I know if they have a seperate madrel setup for the 18" w/ the taper. But it is an option if Criterion doesn't work out.

Just keep in mind that while Criterion barrels are good, they are not held to the same tolerances as Kreiger

I've been tossing around this same idea.

I want to take one of my MK12s and do a cut to 17", reprofile the barrel to a medium contour (Or have Marvin Pitts dimple it entirely) and add a Triple Tap to it. I'd leave the GP the current size. The barrel on both of my 12s is a Douglas SS.

Most likely I'd use a NF 1-4 on it.

I've read a few reviews on the Noveske 17" barrel. From what I've gathered, the barrel is shit hot and works well. IIRC there was an upper for sale on the EE here built by MSTN that had this barrel.

    Standing by for some updates.

Okay. Good news and bad news.

I spoke to an impressively polite and knowledgeable lady at Criterion barrels. She answered all my questions (and supplied additional info) with a qickness and ease that cannot be faked.

Regardless, here is what I found out. Criterion isn't able to accommodate my request for a 17" rifle gas barrel as a one-off. She said they would need to reprogram CNC machines and that, as a business, the overall cost for such a barrel would be close to a grand when man-hours and CNC downtime were factored-in. My dad used to work in the printing business and this did not surprise me. You don't print 2 of ANYTHING. You might print 2 thousand....or 200 thousand of something. Economies of scale, yadda yadda. NO shock here, yet she was as polite and patient as could be.

It is not recommended that Criterion barrels be cut after chrome-lining. She stated that the chrome lining is HIGHLY likely to flake regardless of who did the cutting and how careful they were (she had a high opinion of ADCO, btw.). She stated that she could only rec that a non CL'd Criterion barrel be cut after manufacture. They do not currently manufacture SS barrels that they sell directly...only the ones they sell via BCM. When I explained that the Hybrid profile, or a government/light contour is what I was after, she cautioned me against a drastic re-profiling of an SPR or SAM-R profile barrel. She stated that, while it would not cause the barrel to "fail", it would likely result in deleterious effects on accuracy....effects that she would be unable to predict. She stated that, because of Criterion's proper through heat-treating and stress-relieving processes, milling a substantial portion of the metal off of the outside of the barrel could have some seriously unpredictable effects on accuracy and consistency. She joked that I might as well buy a DPMS or Model-1 barrel at that point and I agreed.

So, I'm back to the drawing board. I REALLY like the Criterion 18" rifle gas barrel in hybrid profile. It is the perfect profile for this project.

So, I'm debating going with the 18" Criterion hybrid profile and leaving it at that. A Quality stainless 18" unit, with a rifle gas system, in a profile I want, and in 410 or 416R is going to be vetty expensive and would include accuracy that I simply will not take advantage of.

Noveske units are sold-out everywhere I check. The only 18" SS barrels I see in a profile I like have either intermediate or middy gas systems...and are sold out....and are $460 + shipping.

I'm going to think on this over thanksgiving.

I'm going to contact ADCO about their success rate with cutting/threading/crowning CL'd barrels. That will have to wait till next week.

Shea talked you out of something goofy and instead sold you something they make and will work fine.

    Sounds like win/win to me.

Sounds like you need to stop posting in my thread if you're going to refer to my experiment as "goofy".

I saw a brand new Nissan R35 GTR today with the blackline package and a Mines cat-back exhaust. Also awesome. Also impossible. :/

    I feel your pain.

Okay, I'm 2-beers-deep into this for the night.

I started looking at ADCO's website and they offer both barrel fluting and ball-milling of barrels. This seems it would have a noticeable impact on weight for a barrel such as this:

    http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-1...brl%2018ss.htm

What do you guys know about ball-milling vs fluting? I don't care if one looks cooler (I kinda prefer ball milling but hat's irrelevant here)...but are there any real world concerns for one over the other like effects on accuracy, barrel harmonics, barrel weight reduction, etc.

    Lay it on me.
