I haven't had a chance to shoot my rifle yet as the trigger is in the mail. Hope I got lucky with the unmatched bolt. Thanks for your input.
To be honest, I don't think anyone either knows how to match a barrel to a barrel or has the correct gauges to do it. So most people simply don't have experience with it so they will just say; "not needed." This of course could be true (as it is shooter dependent).

The quality of the barrel matters a lot (of course) as does the quality of the ammo, trigger and how it is assembled.

Making tolerances extremely tight sounds like a receipt for a failure to extract, also could limit your choices of ammo. Not to say I know it does these things, I would rather stick to a milspec spacing and call it a day. That could just be me however.

I am not sure who said that anyone was making tolerances "extremely tight." A better way to look at is that GO/NO GO gauges are so big that there is room for improvement.

To date, I have never had a single problem with any gun I have done it too (and I probably shoot more than 90% of AR owners). On top of that, when is the last time you heard of a "failure to extract" problem with Noveske AR's???

I understand the point you are trying to make, but you don't know what you are talking about and are making assumptions that hold no water.

    How does this work?
I send you my upper and you pick out bolts until you have a winner?
Would you be able to provide a carrier or would I have to procure one?

I have a build I'm working on based on a BCM SS410 barrel.
I've got a MUR-1 on the way and Troy Alpha also.

I plan on getting the barrel melonited.
Will this affect the matched bolt?

Grant, are the gauges needed for fitting a bolt available? Also, when it comes to assembly, what are your recommendations for squeezing the most accuracy out of an upper?

The gauges and method Grant is using gives him tighter control over the tolerances he's meeting than simply randomly picking a bolt. Grant's method keeps the headspacing from becoming too tight. The way AR barrel assemblies and bolts are made, the only way the headspacing becomes too tight for reliable function is if the chamber itself is cut undersized.

Whether or not the AR has a fitted bolt, the shooter must test various types of ammo to see what shoots the most accurately

We really only do this when someone buys a barrel and a BCG from us at the same time (assuming we have the time).

Just as an FYI, if you have your barrel melonited, you will need to remove the barrel extension and then re-install it.

I honestly don't know (as I got them from Noveske).

I am a firm believer that the less tension on the barrel nut and FH/MB the better. So I use the bottom of the spec (or less if I can) and always time the FH/MB with shims.

WMD offers a service to melonite parts.
I will have to inquire with them about removing the barrel extension.

Out of curiosity, why would the barrel extension have to be removed?

    Because it will come loose.
