    OP,

There are a couple different ways you can go in order to extend your reach. I personally prefer longer rails because I have orangutang arms.

First rail you could go with is this:

    https://danieldefense.com/rail-syste...-extended.html

This would require you to have your front sight base cut/shaved to fit under the rail.

You could also try the Knights Armament URX 3.1 that's 13.5" long. Again it will require you to get your FSB cut.

    http://www.knightarmco.com/rail-adaptor-systems/

The down side to the KAC is their proprietary barrel nut and the expense associated with the wrench and rail alignment tool. However I overlook that aspect because the rails are pretty frickin awesome.

You could also go with the LaRue 13.2" free float rail. Again, your FSB would need to be cut.

    http://www.laruetactical.com/larue-t...guard-lt15-132

The up side to the KAC nad LaRue rails are they both have integral sling attachments. The Daniel Defense does not. All rails are free float. The LaRue is a tad heavier of the 3 (I think).

One of the best companies I've used to cut FSBs (I lack the patience for it) has been ADCO. They did an outstanding job on a build for me and worked it to the "T" on my requests. Specialized Armament is also an outstanding company for work and is second to none when it comes to Colts.

There's a lot of great information here on this site. I reccomend reading and searching for more information.

If I were to embark on a build like yours:

ADCO for the full cut of the FSB and repark
ADCO for the URX 3.1 installation
    KAC URX 3.1
    KAC 200-600 meter sights
    Aimpoint T1

Of course that's just all my opinion.

I'm guessing some rifle retraining may be in order to properly hold and fire a carbine compared to the hunting rifles I've shot.

Honestly I think I got a little over zealous about all the cool configurations with carbines. It's a big new world and I think excitement got the best of. This will most likely be my only AR for a long time (unless I plan on getting a divorce) so my mind quickly raced to modifying it unto a great all-purpose rifle.

After finding the sticky's, reading then, and also taking all your advise into considers, I will go ahead and begin small. Enjoy the rifle for what it is and only add when I come across a purpose to do so. I am thankful today for all of you. Sometimes it's very embarrassing to admit a lack of knowledge in firearms when you have shot for many years. You have all lend me sold, sound, and frank advise. That is the best thing I could have asked for. I will post a pick of my carbine when I get it and instead if buying a rail I will take the money and buy 1000 rounds at Cabelas Doorbuster event. They are having a great sale on Federal .223 55 gr. the store I bought my Colt from stated that's a great weight for the 1/7" barrel twist.

Sorry for typos, I'm on my phone while getting my toddler in the car.

Have the best Thanksgiving ever folks! Be safe, aware, and Thankful!
ARs are Barbies for men so its hard not to get excited. For your size it's clear you will need a longer rail for your support hand. You'll just need to figure out which one. I'm happy with my DD lite 10.0 on my LMT and still deciding what I want for my new BCM lw carbine. Essentially the same as the 6720. At 5'7" a carbine cutout is probably the winner.

I just bought into a 6920 kit and I am not very familiar with AR15 mods so I am going to continue to read posts, ask questions and soak up information here then move forward with my modifications.

I am brand new to the AR world. This disclaimer is here so if this thread comes off as naive, or I come off as naive, it is because I am naive. With that said, here goes my first thread ever about a brand new rifle....

I am getting my new Colt 6720 off of layaway in a few weeks. I purchased the Colt due to outstanding reviews and I have never owned a Colt before so I figured it was as good of time as anything to. I have had years of .223 experience but they have all been bolt action rifles. While most of this stock rifle will suit my needs while I break myself in on the AR, I would like to upgrade the rail system to something that can grow with me. Now for the questions, what are the constraints that I will need to know when looking for a rail system (length, weight, compatibility, etc...)? Also, I have been told I will need to upgrade the gas system (naive moment). How much work does this entail? Is adding a new rail system to the Colt something a novice in this type of rifle can do? Is a gunsmith required or it is as simple as exchanging parts?

Along with responses to this post, please let me know if I in any way did not follow proper thread etiquette. Since I am new all the way around I want to make sure to do things properly so I can gain as much knowledge as possible. Thank you all so much for all of your input ahead of time and I look forward to checking in and reading any/all replies.

Even though I agree with all the advice given here, I will mention another perspective. I was in a similar position, had shot most of my life but wanted a serious rifle with some serious training. I took the advice of folks and got a 6720 without much 'flair'. I added some MOE stuff and a light and H1. I wanted to add a long rail (I'm tall like you and wanted some reach) but I waited based on advice. I got some training.

At the end of the class, it was painfully evident that a longer rail was in order. Indeed I concluded that if I had just gotten the rail like I suspected I should've, I would have gotten more out of the class. I had reinvented the wheel, in a way, for no good reason.

All that said, I felt that way after putting a lot of rounds downrange and reading everything in sight for years. So it wasn't an emotional tacti-lust..

If you feel like that much might apply to you, you're going to want a 12" handguard that goes well past the FSB.

The options are to shave the FSB down and run a handguard over it, or to just keep the FSB and run an 12.0 FSP rail.

I decided on the latter (the Centurion C4 12.0 FSP rail), and after dremeling away the delta ring and snipping the handguard cap and sling swivel off, the install was incredibly easy. The end result with this rail is fantastic, the only downside at all is that you still have a fixed sight (not much of a downside if that's what you wanted anyway).

I run the old style Daniel Defense clamp-on lo-pro gas block with a DD 14" Lite Rail over it. To prevent the gas block screws from backing out, after they were tight, I TIG welded 1/4 of the screw heads to the gas block body just fusing the metal. Work great.

Out of all the rails I've used and currently own, the KAC RAS is my most favorite for it's simplicity and solid lock up. It does what you need it to do and nothing more.

Having said that, the URX III/3.1 is one of the best free float rails out there. That's just my opinion but it is what it is.

The downside to the RAS is that it doesn't give you the "reach" many long(er) rails give you. The up side to them is that you can have them (Usually) for ~150-200 shipped with all its pieces and parts, ready to go with minimal fussing on installation and no special gunsmith work required.
