We have one stage on our quarterly carbine qualification where the shooter inserts a magazine loaded to 20 rounds (we issue 30 round G.I. mags, although we recently started issuing P-Mags as replacements). This is also the shortest of the different stages, giving the shooter 15 seconds to fire 5 rounds standing, perform an emergency reload and then fire rounds kneeling at 25 yards. Gear placement is key, as are efficient manipulations. I have found that I have seen a lot of double feeds at this stage as the magazine is not fully loaded and some shooters fail to understand the distinction between tap and tug and beat the hell out of the bottom of the magazine on insertion. Because the mag is loaded ten rounds short, shooters too aggressive on beating the bottom of the magazine actually dislodge a round, which is brought forward with the stripped round as they release the bolt, creating a double feed. This problem is exacerbated by worn feed lips and worn magazine springs.

interesting - the mag was purposely short loaded to only 5 rounds - as it was being sighted in at the time

Watch the first malfunction clearing method in this video. I have not had a bolt overide that couldn't be cleared using this. Same fix for charging handle impingement and double feeds as well so for training purposes, it is more uniform. The key to this method is ramming the charging handle home after locking the bolt back. This usually creates enough vibration that the cases will fall out on their own.

Take a 30 round magazine, load anywhere between 5 and 20 rounds in it and hold it in your outstretched right arm utilizing a beer can grip. Now take your support hand and whack the bottom of the magazine. Count the rounds that fly out. Now imagine what happens to those rounds if the magazine were inserted into the magwell.

+1...this was demonstrated in my last Redback One class to show why you don't slam a mag home by beating smacking the bottom of the mag.

Glad you sorted it out. Looking at the picture that is a bolt over ride stoppage that we induced and cleared multiple times at the last Redback one carbine course I attended. The way we set these bolt over rides up, my charging handle would regularly get stuck and not budge.

Speaking of RB-1, RB-1 taught a specific mortaring technique for bolt over rides that worked very well, even with jammed charging handles that wouldn't budge, and at times my bolt was as far back as yours appeared in those pictures.

So mortaring seems to work really well when done properly. Can someone shed light on why many suggest that mortaring should never be done?

Also, I wonder if the Tap portion of Tap Rack Bang ought to be Push/Pull Rack Bang..

good video but it doesn't apply in this particular circumstance
neither the bolt or CH would move - both wedged tight until
I popped the take down pins and used a punch and mallet to the bolt
