Hey guys i know there are threads with savage vs remington but most go in to building/working the action. If one is looking to do NO action work then which one is the better?

I'm just looking to at MOST slap a new stock on it, trigger, new bolt knob.

    Of course rings, scope, bipod.

    Google rem 700 5r milspec.

They shoot bugholes is .308 & 300 WM

look into the 5rs I believe there is a 24 but I think its a 1/12.. you could always shoot the piss out of it and replace the barrel or, sell the 5r barrel and get a rock, Schneider ect.....

I still would not consider the savage over the 700 there is a reason why the Mil/Le uses 700s so-much

    24" & 26" in 300WM.

    24" is threaded.

    I believe the 223 and 308 come in 20" and 24".

I've owned Remington 700s and I am currently using a .308 caliber Savage 10FCP to shoot F class. Either rifle will serve you well. I like a 1:10 barrel twist to stabilize 175g bullets and it gives me the ability shoot heavier bullets. I believe that 175g is the heaviest bullet a 1:12 barrel will stabilize well. A 175g bullet will take you out to 1,000 yards if that is your ultimate goal and either rifle will shoot it well enough.

Keep your ear to the ground. There are a lot of bolt action rifles with round counts of less than 2,000 rounds out there and you may be able to get more for your money by buying a used rifle.

For the price and how things are manufactured today,

    Savage.

I've heard of too many people at my local range of the bolt handles snapping off of their remingtons.

I shoot 5-6 savages everytime I go to the range. Never have had one problem with any of them.

For factory sporter barrels, they perform great.

Many people complain about the axis/edge tubberware stock.

Their is a simple/cheap fix to it.

Just some steel rods and 5$ quick set epoxy and the stock is rock solid.

I would imagine Remington c/s would be on a thing like this.

    Myself seeing it personally? Twice.

When I talked to the range officers, they have told me about it three times happening.

    Was with the cheaper Remingtons.

I'm sure Remington's c/s took care of it, but it shouldn't happen in the first place; unless it was user error.

How do you know it wasn't? Some of the shit I've seen people do to their rifles... it's no wonder there are so many complaints about things not working for people.

No matter what you build, someone will break it.

It very well could have been. But I've never heard of anyone breaking their savage bolt knobs off. Even the cheap Axis.

I'm guessing it was a case that refused to come out and they banged the hell out of it a little too hard.
