The best scope that I found similar to what you are looking for is the Leupold 2.5x20mm FX-II. It is a very simple, fast, durable optic. I used one for more than a year on a 5.56 AR. I still have it and keep it as a back-up scope.

    For what, plinking?

Weaver V3 is a good scope for pretty cheap.

However, if possible spend a bit more and get the Leupold Mark AR.

What are the limitations of the Nikon Monarch scopes? At what point does one reach them?

Vortex makes a decent 1.75-5 in their Diamondback line that you can find for sub $200.

after a lot of looking around i got a leupold vx-hog scope, $229 from opticsplanet.com and seems to have to good reviews. I've got leupolds on my other hunting guns and love them, along with the lifetime warranty (that i have had to use and saved me lots of cash).

I like my Burris Fullfield II 2-7x35. I installed it on a Burris PEPR mount with the railed scope rings and a Burris Fastfire on too. I really like this setup but, that's just me! It was around $180 for the scope alone.
