The fouling isn't an issue for defense... unless you're going through hundreds of rounds in your scenario.

That said... I basically agree with you. The can isn't worth the extra length and weight for me.

And GOOD LORD it's still loud to shoot a suppressed 5.56 in a building. That borderline hearing safe shooting you get outdoors goes out the window in an average building.

My house gun is an 11.5" unsuppressed AR.

If Illinois would let me have one I'd get it just to keep from irritating the neighbors when I shoot.

For sure. If you CAN get one, you should.

Particularly, I am wondering what the advantage is versus a good muzzle brake.

As far as I see now, some of the key advantages are lack of flash and lack of volume.

Is the recoil impulse affected for the better for faster follow up shots?
Is it worth the weight penalty? Is it worth the purported increase in fouling?

I can understand in a precision rig situation the multitude of advantages shooting suppressed, but not exactly in a CQB type situation.
Everything about a can makes it superior (less the cost and hassle of getting it).

I do have an 11.5 that with the "wrong" ammo will flash bang like a mofo.

But my house gun with it's A2 isn't very flashy using good ammo.

I shot my 10.5 last weekend using XM193, and that sucker had quite the flash.

    Haha get it? "CAN" lolz...

It's worth the hassle to get one. I'm saving my pennies to grab one myself come tax return season.

SteyerAUG posted an Op Ed a while back explaining why it was essentially our DUTY as American Gun Owners to buy a can if we were able to.

He has an AAC Brakeout. It's the combination flash hider/brake. Don't think it's much louder than other brakes. It's the short barrel.
