Destructive devices include firearms with a bore of greater than one half inch. There's an exception in the destructive device definition that allows the ATF to exclude firearms from being considered destructive devices as long as they find that the firearm has a "sporting purpose". Almost all shotguns have bores of greater than one half inch. And so when the GCA passed and the DD definition came into effect they said shotguns have a sporting purpose.

But then what the ATF did later was make a ruling that said they don't consider the Street Sweeper and USAS-12 to have a sporting purpose, and bam it puts them back in the DD category.

FWIW there's a version of the Street Sweeper in .410 gauge called the Ladies' Home Companion and it's not a DD like other Street Sweepers because the bore's small enough.

I'll say I'm a bit surprised by this forum. We've gone from a group of reasonable people talking about NFA items who would have shut down a thread like this in the past to a group of ranting loonatics basing everything off of speculation and no facts.

If you truly believe that all semi auto's or at least all AR type rifles will soon become NFA controlled items then you've lost your minds. It's because of this thread alone that I no longer look to the people on this forum as knowledable and no better than any other sight on the internet. And with this I say goodbye to you all, I can no longer trust this forum for responsible factual information.

So because some people have different opinions you are simply going to roll out? I'll bet you may be surprised that there are actually people in the industry who think that the President and or Congress may attempt to do just what is being talked about here.

I am not saying it will happen. But, we all know that our politicians are idiots and have made some stupid decisions in the past.

Do you watch the new? This adminstration has NOTHING to lose and will do what ever it takes to make gun ownership difficult or impossible for us. I guess you think that nothing bad will happen to us because nothing bad ever happens in America...

I hope obama gets crucified over fast and furious when he pokes his stupid head up begging for more gun control.

If we didn't have "gun free zones" around schools, there would be far less probability dipshits would go there to shoot kids. Right now, there's no way a teacher or staffer would risk their job carrying - and that's exactly what we need.

One cop per school doesn't cut it. Wonder why he picked an elementary school? Because the Jr and Sr high's have liason officers stationed permanantly in most of them... The coward popped himself when the first officers got close enough. Why the hell wasn't someone closer??

People feel bad, they hurt over what's happened here. Emotions are currently running very high. While the anti-gun crowd is going to use this as an opportunity to advance their agenda, I don't really think it's possible to pull off another AWB - but that doesn't mean I don't think they won't try.

So I served 26 years, and at one time had full access to a full arms room which meant I could have walked out with lots of nice toys anytime I wanted, but now that I'm retired (w/CCW) I cant be trusted? So let's take the guns away from the lawful owners in order to protect the populace from the unlawful ones?

In the end there will be a lot of hand-wringing, and an attempt; but in the end I think the 2nd will be upheld. Too much SCOTUS precedence already set.

I have been worried about something like this for years (starting with the Chechens at Breslan). My 11 year old is in 6th grade - I hate it but I'm almost always armed. Even if there wasn't a clear shot I'd have to try and find a way to distract the shooter; there aren't many here who wouldn't risk taking a bullet if necessary to try and keep someone from this...

Back to the OP: I just hope my 1st NFA purchase doesn't get further delayed or withheld....

I'm always puzzled at how many people on the forums won't risk their own ass to help.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, ALL Vet's, Pro Constitutionalist, Pro Freedom, Pro Gun Right/2nd Amendment, Pro Americans, or anyone with an associated bumper sticker, anyone who has more than 2 weeks of food, preppers, speaks against the current administration, are on their watch list. That includes us on gun forums...

[QUOTE=markm;1471741]I used to worry about this all the time when my kid was in elementary school.

I live in a small town with 3 police officers, one of them whose wife works for me. He and I had a talk one day after one of these things, and I told him if it went down and I was nearby, please not to shoot me because I was coming to help him because my child's in that school and I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit around outside til help comes. I have to belive that most LEO's, given this situation, might bend the rules a little...
