Damn. I hate diagnosing these things online. You said the bolt locks back operating manually. That means there should be no issue with lengths. It's a function issue. Replace spring and buffer since they are both bad. Now, shoot the thing. If it does it again it can be either over or under gassed. Under gassed (leaking) will cause the bolt to short stroke. Have you checked your gas rings?

Ok well now I'm lost ....I understand why it is there but now I'm back to where I started ....

I have measured all of my parts

Buffer was 3 1/4" until I cut it to 3"ish

    Buffer.tube is 7" inside

So Wtf where is the problem

B4 I cut the buffer down and just put the buffer and bcg w bolt forward it would stop or bottom out w .010-.015 clearance ......

Gas rings on bolt? Yes 3-6&9 my first assumption was a leaking gas block that's y I have pics of it I feel its leaking discharging rusty oil looking stuff and therefore under gassed and short stroking ..... But that still wouldn't give me the bolt forward bcg back 1/4" clearance to the bolt catch

That pic you posted sure looks like 1/4 inch. You have at least as much clearance as I do. Plus, it catches on hand cycle. I'd really be looking at a gas leak.

I just checked my two known good rifles, a factory DDM4 V7 and a build on an Aero Precision lower with mostly BCM parts. Both are a fat 1/8" off the bolt catch with the bolt forward in the BCG....just like yours. I am now more confident your issue is gas related.

I scaled that spring in your hand based on the buffer you had in the same pic. No way that spring is 9". Do you have access to another bolt carrier group?

I only got the 1/4" clearance AFTER u cut the buffer stop in half....and yes I have a stock dpms I compaired the two bcg and they are the same size def not 1/4" too lond the upper wouldn't mate to the lower if that was the case....I'm going to take this rifle to ADCO on Wednesday

He has built hundreds if not thousands of ar style rifles and I'm sure he will make it right
