You just need to forget all of this, bite the bullet... and just get the NT4.... that was the original suppressor for the Crane issued Mk18's... rated for f/a fire from a 10.3" barrel... so that says a lot... its a tank... solid Inconel... and I think they throw in some unicorn bones with a dash of leprechaun teeth for flavor... playful yet robust...

Keep in mind this is completely unscientific, small sample size and a bunch of low speed civilians. To the ear, the Surefire was the loudest, with the KAC and AAC noticeably quieter. The KAC is a lower sound and the AAC a higher pitch sound.

Visually, the Surefire has a greater visual signature than the other two. The KAC and AAC are pretty close with with, and we think the AAC has a slight edge on the KAC.
The different barrel lengths and different gas-port sizes make any comparison a moot point except the AAC vs. SF muzzle signature. Ejection port noise variance due to gas-port size makes comparing all but tone impossible in a level-field manner.

My 1st choice is the Surefire SOCOM556-SB.

The 2nd choice (and maybe it should be a tie for 1st, I really don't know) is the AAC M4-2000

Is is fair to say that a debate between the two is splitting hairs?
Yes. I would get the regular SOCOM, though.

Like I originally said, completely unscientific. Just some information from what I have experienced.

I understand, I was just saying that it's not even subjective. It's like saying "I saw a Z06 racing a GT-R, and the GT-R won, but the Z06 took off in an oil-slick".

Not trying to be rude at all, just saying that a lot of variables go into how a suppressor sounds. Even how much hearing-loss someone has at various frequencies matters.

Really, any quality .223 suppressor will be quieter at the industry standard 1M 90* from the muzzle than at the ejection port, so it's more about POI shift, flash, mounting solution, and CS balanced against cost/availability.

The data I have for the 556-212 latest version shows @ 25.5-29dB NSR on a 16" carbine based on independent testing. (133-134dB 1M 90* from the muzzle with XM193).

The Surefire 556-212 is almost exactly in the "middle" size and weight wise between the M4-2000 and the Mini-4. However, it trends performance-wise much moreso toward the M4-2000 side of things. Very impressive can.

The Surefire SOCOM556-SB model seems to have my attention based this description:

"The compact and lightweight SureFire SOCOM556-SB Fast-Attach® suppressor is designed specifically for 5.56 rifles with barrels shorter than 10 inches...<snip>the SOCOM556-SB features a larger bore to minimize the probability of baffle strikes due to unstable projectiles, a common issue with ultra-short-barreled weapons...<snip> The SOCOM556-SB suppressor also features advanced internal venting that reduces back pressure, thereby reducing the suppressed cyclic rate and gas blowback on the operator."

That seems to nicely fit the description of what I need, and one of the few cans suggested for a MK18.

Here's the fit on my 10.3 DD MK18 upper, Brakeout, with an AAC M4-2000.

How many shims did you have to use, if any?

Well just my opinion, take it or leave it, not trying to start an argument. I would say it is totally subjective, as my statement was based on my opinion of what I've experienced, and not meant to be a Titsworth type of review, which would be more objective.

Back on topic though...Surefire definitely has great customer service, although my experience with their CS is only relating to their lights. Given that AAC is now Freedom Group though, if I were to buy now I'd probably go with KAC or Surefire (my M4-2k is pre-Freedom Group).
