Hey man! You answered a customer service question for me once

Uses are nothing serious. I'd like to take this to carbine classes for fun, some hunting (being mindful of the reduced absolute range I can take a shot as a result of lost Ft*Lbs), and I'd *suppose* it'd be the gun I want to use for SHTF, but personally I'm not the prepper type, and any goodies I have for SHTF would be purely happenstance.

I think you should be looking at bullet performance, not ft-lbs.

If it's just something you want, go for it. There is nothing terrible about your plan, but I would start with a 16" and run it to see if the weight and ammo load works for you before you get a tax stamp for it. I think there are more practical options to get better than 5.56 terminal performance out of a lighter AR-15 sized carbine.

Those options are 6.8 and 300?

I'm no expert, just throwing this out there, but what about the possibility of a baffle strike? Is the big .308 that stable coming out of such a short barrel ? I truly don't know if it would be an issue, but I thought I heard somewhere about the possibility of baffle strikes as barrel length goes down.

At this point I think that the best SBR caliber is 300. 6.8 its good, but requires a lot of changes that are not beneficial in the AR platform.

The 300 is very promising, but not perfect. It can be chambered and fired in a 5.56 gun, to a distinctly non-positive result.
