Same here; that's why the H-1 is on the shotgun (my house gun).

Great point; hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

Yeah I'm leaning toward giving the Trijicon a shot. At the prices I'm seeing, it won't cost me much to buy it and just sell it if I don't like it.

Now if only I can get those damn contacts in my eyes...

My goal is to become basically proficient in the defensive use of the weapon. I expect to attend about two classes a year, regular drills, etc....

I have an H-1 4MOA on my shotgun and it works great for that, but (probably thanks to my moderate astigmatism) I see a significant amount of fuzz, comet tail, shmutz, whatever-you-call-it around the dot.

Once my AR arrives, I'm inclined to grab a LaRue 751, pop the H-1 on the AR, put the ghost sights back on my shotgun, and start putting some serious rounds through the AR. However, I'm seeing some deals locally on 1-4 scopes, particularly the Trijicon TR24.

Is the H-1 gonna be a problem for 25-100 yds? Is it worth paying the $600 or so (plus finding a mount) to try the TR? I can afford to try it out, but I'd rather sink cash into ammo than kit I don't need.

Or should I just get some damn contacts? Start with irons instead of the Micro?
You can do so much more with a good low power varialbe as opposed to just a red dot. I view the micro red dots as good off set sights to supplement a more powerful optic for close range shooting. But I would not run a rifle with just a red dot in this day and age. Sure they work fine inside 100 yards. But they really limit the potential of the rifle. You can actually shoot further and more accurate with just irons. They have their place as main optics on CQB weapons like SBR's and shotguns but if your running a general purpose carbine or rifle get a good lower power variable. The best solution I have found is to run both. Run the variable as the main optic and the H1 in an Larue 30 degree off set mount as a back up sight and for close quarters work.

Make that prescription shooting glasses. I've seen a few case ruptures that would have caused serious damage or blindness if the shooter had not been wearing protection. Then there is splash-back from shooting steel and a few other things that can and do happen.

Your astigmatism issue will be mitigated as well. (With a RD, I'm full-on grapes w/o glasses.)

I have JUST switched to a Vortex Viper 1-4x24 PST (moa reticule) scope from a Eotech 552. My astigmatism was turning the 1moa center dot into a peanut and the 65moa ring all fuzzy. The Vortex is clear and crisp. The 1x is damn near 1x and has really good eye relief. I just need to get some trigger time in and get used to running a scope with both eyes open at low mag. I ended up paying just north of 600 for the scope and ADM QD mounts. If you would like, I will try to get some pictures of my setup if that would help you out.

How is the weight compared to the Eotech? I know the Vortex is heavier but can you feel a difference?

I prefer the versatility of a variable low power optic. But I always worry about their durability over an aimpoint

I don't feel that much of a difference when I have a full mag in and light hanging off the front. It feels a bit more top heavy, but not so much it bothers me. The versatility of a low power optic outweighs the extra weight in my humble opinion.

As others have stated, the low power optics do have limitations from unorthodox positions. It is raining like crazy here in Washington, so I went out into the garage to try going prone and shooting under the only vehicle I have in the garage, my HD XL1200. Its low, but not slammed. My wife said I looked like I was having a "medical event" as I rolled my solders around trying to work the scope under the motorcycle. Like I said, the eye relief is good, but it is definitely not a RDS. I think with some more practice and using the wheels on my shopsmith as an aiming point, I should be able to get pretty good. A match or two will help.

    Thanks for the follow up.

I've found for me having a fairly strong astigmatism that if the optic doesn't have really close to true 1x I get terrible barrel distortion. I'm "ok" with my micros. I got a Leupold mk6 1-6 and the distortion is bad enough I can't use it.
