Finally, Finally I have it ready to shoot

Well Its been nearly two years in the making. I finally have my 264 win mag ready to shoot. This was a parts build, all the way. Got the barreled action here, stock from Shawn Carlock, Trigger used from a friend, detachable mag system here, and base from ebay. It one of those cases of waiting and waiting for deals.

This is the first rifle I have ever bedded, the first mag system I have installed. Let me tell you OMG this was not easy. I only have hand tools and patience. Its not as easy as I thought.

Rem Sendero 264 win mag( got a spare 338 rum barrel on shelf)
    Timney trigger
HS stock from Shawn Carlock with his cheek pad installed
Atlas worx bottom metal and AI mag
    harris bipod
    Leupold Mk4 M5

I have not shot it yet, I am going to put some loads together tomorrow with H1000, 140g vld, nosler brass, and CCI BR2 primers. I will let you guys know how it turns out, I'm pretty excited.

I need suggestions on stock paint colors?

Excellent build! For color, I'm in Arizona, so of course I'd recommend speckled desert tan.

For colors, combine ATACS desert with multicam. Will be the perfect pattern.

If you want to go on the cheap, do a sponge camo job with some krylon. Damn tough to beat it.

... and I can't part without taking a shot at that nasty mk4. Rip that damn thing off there and put something on more deserving of that fine rifle.

What you think of that bottom metal? Compare it directly against another brand for me if you could.

Thanks guys, I have a bunch of Alumihide 2 and some duracoat here I can apply with my airbrush. I have been considering adding fiberglass resin to the pistol grip area, for texture but I like the smooth surface.

As for the MK4 its my second one and I love it! I have it for sale only for one reason and its to get all my optics on the same page (horus).

Lotta Folk like that 264 WM, good for you. I cant paint shit and have never tried. I can **** up painting a magazine, I wouldnt dare try a rifle.

Looking forward to Range report. Should be a shooter. What velocities do the 264's get?

The Riflesmith just told me this evening, the 264 Winchester Magnum is the flattest shooting long range hunting cartridge there is. He doesn't know why more aren't using it, with the great ballistic coefficients the bullets have. With today's powders, it's now a myth that the cartridge burns up barrels.

It seems much more likely to me that modern barrel steel is more resistant to throat erosion so the problem is less severe. Still, a 264 WM is definitely going to see its precision drop off much faster than, say, a 308 Winchester rifle, all else being equal.

Most hunters would never shoot it enough to go through one barrel even if the barrel life is only 1000 rounds, so that should be a nonissue. More likely they don't see a need for a high recoil, expensive cartridge at their regular hunting distances. How far does your smith expect them to shoot? Most people can't hit a paper plate at 300m from a field position with a laser let alone a rifle, and the people who can probably know their rifle well enough to estimate drop and proper holdover.

    ...

Anyway that's a sweet build. I'd like to do something similar, but more of a short-medium range build in 358 Winchester. Someday...

Your "riflesmith" has obviously never heard of a 7WSM.

I expect to get 3200+ with H1000 and the 140g VLD. But the rifle will tell me what it likes. I have to get a new powder scale, then I will do my my pressure ladder test at .015 off the lands. When I see pressure I back off one full grain, and do my 24 round seating depth test at that charge weight.
