    Ion Bond

School me on ion bonding. I'm no engineer, but it sounds like an worthwhile development by BCM for a BCG. I noticed GTS offers barrels with this exterior, but it seemed to me all the reasons which make it a good choice for BCG would apply to barrel linings.

BCM did not develop it. ION Bond is also not used on the inside of the barrel.

I am in the process of doing Melonited BCG's and barrels. What is great about Melonite is that I can do the outside and inside of SS barrels. My theory is that I should be able to get the accuracy of SS with the longevity of chrome lined barrel.

I understand BCM didn't develop the technology, however they're the only folks I've seen apply it to BCGs for the mass market. Sorry about the implication

If melonite is superior to chrome, and ion bonding hasn't been developed for barrel linings yet, melonite is where I'll focus my attention. How would a lightweight profile SS perform with melonite? What kind of bills are we talking about?

To my knowledge, BCM does NOT offer their BCG's in IONBOND. Another dealer has taken upon themselves to get them coated.

I have not had a SS barrel done in Melonite YET, but the day is coming soon.

No cost yet, but am fairly certain that it will me be much cheaper than IONBOND.

I purchased a Young Mfg. Chrome BCG W/MP tested bolt and LMT Internals all ion bonded from Wes Grant at MSTN. Very pleased with it so far, have not tested it on the range yet.

    please confirm

    ion bond over chrome?

Thanks for clearing up that BCM doesn't do it/get it done. I was a little surprised not seeing this on their website but didn't put it together.

Where is the best site for learning about the barrel lining application of Melonite?

There is nothing on the subject that I could ever find. We intend to push the envelope with this stuff.

A little off topic, but are you still planning to do some 10/22s in Melonite? I thought you said that at some point.

I picked up one from GTS. They start out as BCM's that get Ion Bonded by a specialty house that does this work. Haven't used the carrier yet but it looks decent. The proof will be after running the gun and seeing how it wears, how it cleans up, etc.

Youngs doesn't offer the coating themselves, only phosphated or hard chromed. As the only remaining carrier manufacturer who center grinds to dimensions after heat treating, they are the most consistent carriers available. We have the DiamondBlack coating applied over a factory hard chromed carrier. This was originally recommended by coatings engineers at IonBond for two reasons. One, the chrome provides a cushioning layer that makes the IonBond coating even more durable and two, the extra chrome layer provides even better corrosion resistance. We hand fit and stake chromed keys prior to sending them for coating.

In complete, coated, BCGs we use only LMT bolts. They are 100% shot peened, MP tested and proof round tested. I know of no other IonBond coated bolts that are tested to this level. We also coat the cam pins, extractors and other appropriate internals. Combined with a DiamondBlack-coated Young Mfg carrier and a thin application of GunButter the result is dynamite.
