The thing about Melonite is even if the "finish" is worn off, the protective properties of Melonite are still there.

The Tenifer finish on Glock's is nice, but we cannot use that finish in the US because of the EPA.

There are rumors that S&W changed the coating at some point since the M&P was released. Originally you could soak the slide in Vinegar and the coating would rub off, reports are now that chemicals will not remove the coating. I haven't personally tried but I did hit my side with a hammer on accident and it did not leave any noticeable marks.

I have not heard that, but I also came into the M&P scene about 1yr after they were released.

I never heard about doing that to the slide. Now I do know guys were doing the vinegar treatment to their barrels; maybe you are confusing the two.

I thought it was both but you could be right. I was under the impression the barrel and slide had the same treatment and finish but I could be mistaken.

On early M&Ps you could soak the barrel in white vinegar for 30 min and rub off the black finish with a green scouring pad, it comes of pretty easily.

Sounds like S&W got the finish sorted. Although I respect what I've read about the M&P pistol's ascendancy, and I'll likely convert before too long, I'd prefer to wait until the mag problem is also put to rest. Come to think of it, mag build is another reason why I like Glocks.

Anyhow, does anyone have any layman-level references on how I can read up on Ion bond, Melonite, how they perform compared to chrome? I.e., on the BCG, potential barrel lining, etc.

Thanks again for the superior forum.
