    Hornady 55gr soft point w/c

This is a test I did a while ago but I figured I'd post it here. It was a basic shooting through water jugs test of the Hornady 55gr SP w/c at moderate .223 Remington velocities. I buy these bullets in bulk from Grafs for $8.52 per hundred and think compared to cheap 55gr FMJBT bullets they are more accurate, better for hunting and a better choice for back-up SD ammo. It's not a financial burden to buy 1k of these and keep them around for "just in case" ammo either. That of course is from the standpoint of buying the bullets and reloading the ammo. Hornady offers these in loaded ammo though I think they charge too much. If I had to guess I'd say this is what Fiocchi and Black Hills use for their 55gr SP as well.

I've shot a lot of that bullet, primarily in the BHA 55 JSP new and reman loads but also in the Hornady training line. Excellent varmint and smallest-game load, shallow penetrator that tends to come apart in larger game (see data for the 223A, T223A, etc). Quite accurate when loaded well, feeds reliably in semi and select fire guns.

Drive it really fast and it blows itself apart in a few inches.
