I have a Young Mfg. F/A BCG done in hard chrome and I also have one of the early FailZero NiB F/A BCG's.

Both bolts were very tight fitting into the carriers and were most likely out of spec (compared to my other 10 which are a mix of Colt, LMT, BCM, DD, and G&R).

Both were not as easy to clean as the marketing wants you to believe.

The FailZero, although tight, worked right out of the box. The Young's BCG had lots of issues for the first 100 rounds and then was perfect.

I eventually got out the Flitz and a Dremel tool and buffed the living shit out of both until they were both very shiny and cycled perfectly smooth. The buffing also made them much easier to clean. If you have never seen a chromed BCG, they have a very matte finish and are not smooth. The NiB BCG has a little more shine to it comparatively.

I'm not saying they are worth the extra money over a reasonably priced LMT/DD/BCM, but if you need one...

Probably not necessary but my Ionbonded BCM BCG is pretty slick.

Hey DaveL, do you mean you only flitz polished the interior of each carrier, where the bolt itself rides? Also, have you made it SOP to polish all of your carriers in this manner? I've often considered this myself, but have refrained, as I didn't want to risk loosening up the inside diameter dimension. OTOH, mere flitz alone, would probably be ok. Just wondering if you do all of your carriers this way?

It's not some finicky 1911, I would never have a BCG that required polishing for the weapon to run correctly. Coated,chrome-lined, or otherwise.

Hmmm... we were fighting a young carrier on a very nice barrel build just last week. Good to know.

On the coated carries I did probably 90% of the overall surface area. I didn't mess with the inside of the carrier, just did the exterior of the bolt. I made them shine.
Really though, they were out of spec and I was just trying to remove enough of the coating to where they would function properly.

I have never messed with polishing a quality stock BCG (Colt, LMT, DD, BCM). There is no reason to polish them. I usually clean them every 1K rounds or so and they get shiny on there own in the spots where friction is present (you lube those shiny spots).

I bought it during the last shortage! It's not even the national match version. I would probably not use another one from Young Mfg.

Mine went in a Global Tactical (Douglas/Compass Lake) 18" SPR-profile barrel. It was so tight at first, it didn't eject the case on the first 3 shots using BH 77gr.
I had used a "field" headspace gauge and it barely made it.

Dave, I guess I misread (easy to do on this phone). I thought u had said you polished the inside of the coated carriers, due to the bolt being an extremely tight fit inside the carrier itself. I've only considered polishing the chrome inside of the carrier, to slick it up, so carbon has a more difficult time sticking.

I've run Microslicked BCGs for the last few years, and for $20 a pop (from a Smith I trust) why not? They seem to manually cycle a little smoother, wear a little less. Our last carbine course (only 1000rds) I tried Froglube for the first time with these BCGs. I've never understood all the hoopla about how "hard" it is to clean a DI weapon. However, I do understand how ridiculously easy mine are to clean now after a carbine course. I didn't bite into the koolaid on either one of these products per se, but they seem to make a nice pair. To each their own.

FYI the bolt, carrier, cam pin, firing pin, and even extractor are microslicked individually

Remember, the Founding Fathers reason for the 2nd Amendment... to combat tyranny. Sadly, when people discuss the 2nd Amendment, the opponents erroneously think it was meant to stand alone... it HAS a preamble:

"...But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security..."

Was the young MFG bolt the national match variety? They are made with more material than a standard carrier. I have one in a SBR and it's been fine. I get the feeling they fit snug, but after a while it wears down the anodizing inside the upper and runs smooth.
