RCA has their new staking machine. They restated my BCG with it and sent it back with a nitrided firing pin. They would have refunded it no questions asked but I requested they restake it once I found out they got their staking squared away.

Looks crappy but I know now that the fasteners are not coming loose.

"When in doubt restake. You can't have TOO MUCH or TOO GOOD of staking on the carrier key, this would be like having TOO MUCH money or TOO MUCH reliability (no such critter)." - Robb Jensen

I wonder if they sprung for Ned's awesome hydraulic Moacks?

I believe that they did. Every mention from them has involved "the machine", and I just cannot see them calling a hand-powered glorified C-clamp device as "the machine that finally arrived"

I would wager that they meant the hydraulic setup, as I am sure yours works fine, but it's not exactly worthy of the descriptions "very nice, expensive machine that we are expecting to arrive this week". Rather, I bet this is what they meant...

Kinda funny 'cause if they'd have splurged the ~ $170 or so for a regular MOACKS right from the start they could've saved themselves beaucoup cash and a lot of criticism. Hell, even a couple of MOACKS if production got ahead of the staker guy.

Some things we will never know the answer to, but RCA is now staking gas-keys correctly, and I don't believe anyone who has contacted them with a product they are displeased with in ANY way has had ANY complaint as to how they were dealt with.

I'm way out of the loop on RCA. Am I correct in understanding that the only thing that differs on these bolt carrier groups is that they are not HP tested? Carpenter 158 bolts, mpi, hardened extractor, shot peened, 8620 carrier, etc are all being used? What are they using for the gas key? Can someone update me with a current list of specs? Glad to see they invested in a good staking machine.

They are batch MPI tested currently.

    8620 Carrier
    C158 Shot-peened bolt
    Correct tool-steel extractor

QPQ treatment takes the place of a heat-treat, and is performed as such to mirror USGI heat-treat specs. H&M sectioned numerous bolts to figure this out, and mirror it precisely, at all given depths/parts of the bolt (core, lugs, surface, etc.)

QPQ is on everything but the springs and small pins, IIRC. Firing pin on most, soon to be all (supply limited the last batch).

Bolts use radiused lugs, and remind me of the JP enhanced bolt.

    JP Bolt:

    RCA Bolt:

Extractor spring is nothing special, and uses an O-ring that I cannot ID. I replace all of mine on all BCG's with the gold colored Colt spring, anyway.

Everything is also cooled to temperatures far below zero to aid in alignment of the metal.

Some form of lubricant is applied to it. I was told to think of it like I would the dry-film that manufacturers use in uppers. It's not a "gotta have it", but it's a nice feature until things lap themselves in perfectly.

The gas keys were forged, now they are switching to Billet. They are QPQ'ed of course and meet USGI hardness spec's.

As you have likely surmised, the QPQ treatment is the big deal here. QPQ is great for corrosion resistance, and for wear resistance, as well as enhancing the impact-strength of metals which have undergone the treatment. Glock uses it on their barrels, S&W on their slides and some AR barrels, Daniel Defense on their barrels.

JP uses it on their carriers.

RCA is the first to use it on their bolts, from what I understand.

As of yet, I haven not heard of a bolt breaking.

Wow, 11 pages on a new BCG mfg., I now have a headache and I'm trying to determine if RCA is good to go, or if it's the new DPMS or Bushmaster?
Some of the pics of staking look like DPMS / Bushy level work. But, now it's okay because of an anecdotal reference of someone was planning to return a Bushy staked BCG but was convinced by a telephone conversation, not to??
Are you guys keeping them or are you returning for refund??
So, bottom line, RCA is a) the next BCM, or b) the next Olympic Arms????
Send lawyers, guns and money the $#!+ has hit the fan...
