    HeadDown Rifles...

I know less than nothing about this manufacturer but have a chance to snag a new, in-box HDX TAC7 for the MSRP Price:

    http://www.hdrifles.co/rifles/hdx_tac7.cfm

This opportunity is on a pre-order basis so I can't actually inspect the product beforehand. I will, however, be able to select my purchase from among the shipment my dealer is receiving. My searching hasn't turned up any red flags thus, any input from someone with direct experience with HeadDown's products will be much appreciated. I'm seriously considering it in light of the current market situation and barring anything serious, will likely add this one to my Colt 6920.

    Thanks.

The red flags should be the lack of any real specs on their website.
Are the BCG and barre MPI/HPT?
What material are the bolt and barrel made of?
    etc....

ATI,Headown and Mossberg's AR-15 uppers and lowers are made about 20 miles from where i live by a custom CNC machine shop in a guys back yard.

I cannot vouch for tolerances but i did get to see production and they are the standard milspec forged aluminum.

At the time i toured the place all the other parts on the guns were farmed out from other suppliers.

Thats all i can tell you.

Good points & well taken. I do know they are partnered to provide parts for some of the ATI guns and what few reviews I've been able to find have been pretty complimentary as to fit, finish & performance. There's a lot of knowledgeable folks here with no ax to grind & just hoping a few have some first-hand experience. I'm skeptical too but I'm not ready to write 'em off just yet.

I have seen one, got to handle it...Meh, was not impressed. Not a bad rifle (so it seemed) but not for the price. Couldnt tell if MPI/HPT rated, what steel used, or if BCG was even staked. I do think that its funny a company with no reputation, is price gouging right out gate. Like I said I handled rifle (did not shoot, nor talked with any who had).

That gas block they show in the image on their website looks like a "China Special" from Amazon. That's enough to put me off.

I took a look at their page and did a quick comparison of the different rifles they offer. According to info on the forged uppers: all bolts are Mil-spec Carpenter 158 (nothing mentioned about testing), barrel steel not specified but Melonite coated inside and out (not Mil-spec), chambered as 5.56, rifling 1:7. I'm not an SME, does anyone who is want to weigh in on Melonite vs. chrome bore?

Seems to me that the forged receiver basic rifle has a high side of reasonable MSRP at $899 if all is as they advertise, though it should come with at least some basic iron sights. After that the prices on the forged receiver models climb pretty quick with nothing but the addition of a FF rail in 3 different lengths of 7"($1099), 10"($1249) or 12"($1299).

The billet receiver models have the same barrels and bolts with the exception of the one model w/ a stainless 18". Standard features listed are impressive but I don't think it justifies the price jump.

They even list the prices of their complete uppers (billet versions) and if you subtract the price of the upper from the price of the complete rifle it corresponds to, you end up with a price variance for an identical lower assembly of $515 - $904! (I double checked the math and did it on the calculator twice) $515 is high for a complete lower even right now; $904 is absolutely ridiculous.

The railed gas block and lack of MPI/HP is enough to turn me off. And they don't even offer PMags!!!

I am of the opinion that there are too many established AR manufactures putting out a "sure thing" for me to consider an upstart. I just don't have that kind of money to dick with. Your situation may differ..
