Melonite is more accurately described as a metal treatment than a coating and is very similar to the tennifer treatment used by Glock. The only other AR manufacturer using it I know of is S&W. There's an excellent article on it @ AccurateShooter.com. FWIW, they do ship with PMags.

My local dealer is setting up a trip to tour their setup to get some first-hand insight into their operation. So far, all their information has came from other dealers they have a relationship with in other areas.

The only reason I am even considering one is I'd like to add another one while I still can and the better known "sure things" are either unavailable indefinitely or, are ridiculously priced. Although the model I'm looking at is priced for what you could buy a Colt 6920 for a month ago, that's over as for as I can tell & is likely to remain this way for a lengthy period even if new AR sales are not banned outright. My thought is that if the main components are functional & sound, I may be better off in the long run using as a base correcting anything minor than trying to find quality components (read, "lower") at realistic prices. I've been wrong before though.

I live real close to the Head Down shop and have visited on a couple occassions. I shot one of their rifles at a local range day where they brought several guns to my local range for a demo. They do farm out most of their parts to a quality machine shop on the north side of Atlanta. The boxes of parts I saw them building guns out of was some really nice looking stuff.

The low end guns are much like everyone elses and the high end stuff is something I sure would like to have in my collection. They use Frog lube on all their internals, NIBX coated BCG, Geissele 2-stage triggers and all guns except for the lowest end come with the KNS anti-walk trigger pins.

A buddy of mine pre-ordered one of their top of the line Provectus MK12 rifle and is expecting to pick it up this week. I will let you know how it shoots when he brings it home.

One other thing, the guys that work at their shop are some good ole boys from Ga who anyone would be proud to call my friend. They build good stuff that anyone would be proud to own!

Good to know, thanks. Always nice to get tidbits of information from someone with first-hand contact. "Good ole' boys" are my kinda folks, we speak the same dialect and tend to understand one another.

Geissele triggers and frog lube aside, these guys don't sound like they're any good.
When they don't list specs on their website, that should be a red flag.

Head Down website does actually post some relevant specs on components. You just have to spend some time looking at the site.

The HDX M4 is reasonably priced based on the info on their site.

Lone Oak - Welcome. Those are some very nice holsters!

I never intended to generate a flap about the particular vendor, my intention was simply to see if anyone had firsthand dealings with their products and anyone's is welcome. On the particular rifle I'm looking at, if it's on par with the Bushies, Windhams & similar, that's all I need to know. With the market in turmoil for the foreseeable future I'm inclined to think the risk may be worth it as long as the major components are sound. If need be, any minor tweaking of individual parts can wait until things calm down a bit. It seems more reasonable to me to take this approach than trying to get an "unobtainium" high-quality lower now while I still legally can (not to mention the rest). If it turns out that the product is pure junk comprised of inferior components then, no problem, I'll drop the idea & move on. It may be the safest approach but I don't know if it's always the smartest thing to blow off a small shop no one's heard of without at least taking a hard look. This place surely fulfills the "hard look" part so for me, it's all good.

I have one of their billet lowers. I would trade it in a heartbeat for a mil-spec stripped lower. The finish is terrible and it has a lot of sharp edges. I used it for a plinker instead of a .300 BLK Noveske barrel build. It took them forever to admit the buffer detent hole was drilled too small and I eventually fixed it myself after horror stories of friends sending theirs back and then waiting months only to find it was sitting on a shelf untouched.

Thanks, that's the sort on information I'm looking for. I've noticed they spec forged lowers on their rifles but offer billets as components. Maybe there's a good reason.
