If all you need is an index point for your hand, you can try the front sight or a piece of rail cover.

Just my 2 cents - shoot your AR a lot (take a class even) and experiment with hand placement without the grip, then add one later if it will enhance your control of the weapon. I'm always reluctant to add weight/bulk to my gun unless I need to.

I agree that what works for one does not work for another. I am currently using AFG. Would like to try a hand stop.

    AFG vs VFG

I started out with the longer VFG, to bulky. Then went to the Magpul Shorter MOE VFG that I still use on shorter rails. But most of my AR's have the Magpul AFG which is my favorite.

Go to a gun store that has an indoor range and try different things, everyone is different. Tell someone working what you are trying to do and see if there are any T&E grips for you to use.

Personally, I can't stand the vertical fore-grip and swear on the Magpul AFG. The two people I shoot with the most go bare and only use the hand guards.

Everyone is different, try several things and see what works for you and what feels good in your hand.

Forget the AFG. Useless. Either vert grip or hand stop. Vert should be a reference point

Why is the AFG useless? Data?

I don't prefer a AFG on my rifle but it works very well on my shotgun.

I prefer a stubby vert grip. One reason I do and I can't really explain exactly why but when transitioning from shoulder to shoulder my support hand can index the vertical grip better than a handstop or AFG. In other words my hand can 'find' the correct placement more efficiently. Why is this? Dont know. YMMV.

The AFG is a good grip. I gave it an honest try, but I ended up switching to the RVG. To me it just felt like a more comfortable traditional grip, which I liked a lot. When I tried the vertical grip, however, it just felt more natural to ME. As most everyone else is saying, it's really a personal thing. You should try them both and return/sell the one you don't want.

One nice thing about the AFG on a carbine, right under the FSB, with a 12" rail, is it positions my thumb in the exact right position for a 12 o'clock mounted Surefire X300 light.

Try all three and see what works for you. No one here can tell you what is going to give you the best results for you. Personally I've tried all three and I ended up using Magpul VFGs, but like others I use it more like a hand-stop, just as an index point when shooting. I like having the VFG for maneuvering with the weapon and for use against barriers.
