I actually run both AFG (out front) and the RVG (near mag) on my 14in DD lite rail. I like variety, but as stated in numerous other responses.....Its all personal preference.Happy shooting and do what works for you!

1: it is not a matter of personal preference, but personal performance.
2: there is a learning curve with every device/technique. Unless you really know how to use the item/technique it is really only an aesthetic decision.
3: if you can't quickly determine the pros and cons of each item/device with a little hands on use, then you don't have a sufficient frame of reference to draw an accurate conclusion from.
4: in the absence of collected/available/significant data, I recommend paying attention to what the high level performers are doing, and that is either a bare handguard, a VFG as a backstop/reference point, or a small handstop.

IMO, a few ounces of un-needed weight.
I did install a foregrip on my M16 for full auto control, it helped.
I keep my AR15s stripped to bare bones to keep them light. Aimpoint H1 optics on all and backup iron sights. The DD mk18 next to the bed has a Surefire X300.

you just have to try different stuff out. If it works for you keep it, if it doesnt, dont use it.
I'm going to take the time to help you here. first, without knowing anything about your history or experience, your comments (and equipment choices) make it plain you are not an expert in this field.
F2S is an SME in addition to being an industry professional and a moderator. that means Subject Matter Expert and you don't get this by post count or knowing people. when F2s gives you some advice, it's time to use the "two ears/one mouth" rule and seriously consider he knows what he's talking about -- http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=94088
second, you seem to lack critical reading/understanding skills as what the poster that you are referring to said, is he uses it for "full auto control". a VFG may be an "unneeded" accessory on a semiauto but it's very existence was necessitated by full auto fire...
I realize you are new to the board and trying to establish your cred, but this isn't the way to go about it...
