Wolf 7.62x39 124gr HP Gel Test Results

Just finished up testing the Wolf 124gr 7.62x39 HP round from my Krebs AK-103K. The test was shot at 15 ft, 75 degrees, and 300 ft of elevation and the Clear Ballistics FBI spec gel block was used with 4 layers of denim.

    Results:

    -2207fps, 1341 ft/lbs energy
-The round didn't expand per se; but the jacket did tear open (see video below for the specifics)
    -Deepest penetration point was 31''

The manufacture of the gel block, Clear Ballistics, claims their gel meets FBI specs for testing. I calibrate my gel per their specs prior to testing and use 4 layers of denim per IWBA protocol.

However, by no means am I saying this test is a substitute for the great work industry professionals like Dr. Roberts and others do. I'm just a shooter that likes to learn about the products I use.

Here's the video of the test:

Are you certain that was the 8M3? I believe that it was only made by Uly factory, and WPA is now all Tula IIRC
My capacity for self deception is exceeded only by yours.

That is why I consider the 7.62x39 a more consistant barrier pentrating round than the 556.

Thanks for the video. Is the 8M3 bullet supposed to yaw sooner than the 8" mark?

Is that directed at me? I don't think it's 8M3....

You do NOT need to use 4 layers of denim for rifle testing--it is irrelevant.

The Clear Ballistics gel blocks are NOT an FBI spec block.

The bullet penetrated far too deeply prior to initial upset; it did not expand, but did have some minor jacket tearing. Essentially it performed very poorly, just like a typical Russian 7.62x39mm FMJ...

It is my understanding that the 8M3 bullet ceased being used once WPA became a Tula distributor. I am only aware of 8M3 bullets being used in boxes labeled "Wolf Military Classic" and not in the newer "WPA" boxes. I have a buddy who bought some of the 8M3 WMC I had from years ago. He is keeping safe for now, but some time ago we shot it into some watermelons in front of concrete block and the bullets fragmented substantially inside of the watermelon (making it explode like a varmint round hit it).

Denim's out---got it; good to know.

I agree with you on the poor performance for sure....
