I have tried many different rail attachments for the forearm... vertical fore grips, Magpul's weird AFG and AFG2. The VFG left me feeling like I didn't control the rifle as well as I should, although the ergos were great. Magpul AFG was very awkward to me, the angle really hurt my wrist. I finally adopted the hand stop approach, and wanted to take a minute here to showcase and plug the Gear Sector offerings for this...
I run my rifles with 2 Gear Sector hand stops installed. One at 6 o'clock, and one at 3 o'clock (because I'm a lefty). I like this because it gives my hand one place to hold firm while firing, and it also sets my thumb in constant position to active the Surefire light held in the Gear Sector mount immediately in front of the hand stop.
If you're less than satisfied with a VFG... give hand stops a thought.
Here is a representative picture of this setup on one of my rifles utilizing a YHM quad rail. I greatly prefer the Troy Alpha rail, but don't have a photo of that at the moment.
