Purpose of the rifle?
Most common range it will be shot at?
Rough budget?
I don't know enough about the Burris to have an opinion one way or the other, but there are a lot of options out there. You don't necessarily need magnification to make hits at 300, my wife does it regularly with her XPS.
If you want more precision oriented shooting, then I would go for a crosshair type with adjustable turrets. Say a SWFA SS 6x42.
Not much good for up close, though. That would belong to the variables. If you have the budget, a good 1-4 will serve you very well.
Ideally it'll mostly be in the 100 yard range, I just want to be able to hit targets at least in the 200-250 yard range if the need ever arise.
Most any non-magnified optic will be able to make hits at 200-300, and be much more useful inside 100 yards.
Best bet is to stick with irons (which are more than capable) until you can save up for a quality RDS. 3X is too much to be primarily used inside 100 yards, IMO.
How are your eyes? You may want to consider a 1 - 4 or higher. I just put a Burris MTAC 1.5-6x40 on my LE6920, and really like it. The 1.5 is fine for inside 50 yards, and it has the flexibity to let you reach out and touch distant targets.
Hey! If somebody finds this thread and is in need of a rifle scope, you can check the reviews of various scopes here: http://reloadyourgear.com/best-rifle-scopes/
I've honestly become a huge fan of the 1-6 Strike Eagle from Vortex. For the money spent, it's pretty awesome, and the American based company with the "run it over and we will replace it" style warranty is pretty darn convenient. I have also looked through the 1-8 version, but found the 1-6 version to be much more polished, optically, and the 1-8 annoyed me. My money would go to the 1-6.
Steiner P4X.
Now a days, given the price of pre-1-8x strike eagles, I'd recommend a 1-6 or 1-8 strike eagle if it isn't going to be used for anything super serious.
Hard to beat a 1-8x for under $500 probably with a mount too if you can find a deal.
