    Scrap this barrel?

I'm new to the site but not to the AR 15. I have built 3 rifles so far and rebuilt my first rifle a year ago. Now to my question:

I have ended up the owner of a 20" SS bull barrel (rifle length gas system) with a gas port of .143". The bore is in good shape but I feel the gas port being so large will make the rifle expierience cycling problems.

So should I scrap it? Or is there a way to fix it without having to spend alot of money that could go toward a different barrel that is good. Thanks for the advise.

Just run the barrel and see how it performs, then decide.
It might choke you to death and might surprise you.
Go for it. In this market, don't trash anything.

If you have a great barrel you want to use, you could save the barrel.

Read the thread that Mistwolf posted Especially the last three pages.

With that said.. I've seen Varmint type barrels like you describe with some pretty big holes in them. Usually you need to get an adjustable gas block or adjustable gas tube to tame them.

The information in that thread, and No I'm not gonna spoil it, will fix you right up.

And at the end of the day remember.. it's a barrel.. good bad or indifferent it has value in today's market.

    Think trade goods if necessary.

I'd love a crack at salvaging that sucker. That port is gargantuan. I spent 5 weeks forking around with an over gassed 11.5.

I couldn't get off of the challenge. I finally got that sucker and it's one of the best running barrels in the rack.

At first I thought you'd made a decimal place error on that port measurement.

The gas port diameter should never exceed 1/2 bore diameter...

    Yeah... that's not a gas port. it's a compensator!
