Or who they tapped to track and catalog the 'Jewish problem' as Eichmann (I believe) said. Making it easier and more efficient to catalog them and later to round them up.

Ha ha. No not really. I just finding it disturbing the Third Reich used a little known American company for the unfortunate but extremely efficient method of tracking Jews......IBM.

    Steyr,

What is in your opinion a good list of books on the 1933 to say Aug 1939 time frame concerning the Third Reich? Also from the signing of the Treaty of Versailles to Hitler's rise in 1933? I've read quite a few myself but I am curious as to your opinion on these two eras.

More specifically on the eras I mean what caused his rise to power and then what led up to the invasion of Poland. Absolutely fascinating times in Europe to me. Thanks,

    -Jax

I immediately think of Shrier "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" but quite honestly the "Prelude to War" volume from the Time/Life series is pretty comprehensive as well. A lesser know book "The Unquiet Germans" by Thayer is also a good read although it is a broader overview of most of the 20th century.

William Shirer's book is quite good and filled with a ton of information but it could've been written better in my opinion.

I am slowly collecting the Time-Life series and I may have to check out Thayer's book. Thanks man.

The most important thing about Shrier's books is when it was written and the resources which we available at the time.

Agreed. Plus I think he was a news correspondent for Murrow (?) in Germany right up to the first part of the war. So he had a unique and direct view of history in the works.

The declassification of Soviet and East German documents is the only thing as significant. But this information has been disseminated more in the form of documentaries than English language books.

Ironically Ambrose had a very comprehensive knowledge base on the subject but never wrote a book specifically about it. He was interviewed for the World at War series but that was about it.

It's just when most people think of Mercedes Benz or Mitsubishi they typically don't think of 109s or A6Ms. And there are plenty of BMW ads in the book as well.
It was one of your posts that enlightened me that the BMW emblem was the prop on a plane.
