Shooting varmits with an AR15 is the sport of hunting.
Target shooting is a sport, an Olympic sport, no less.
    Banging steel is a sport.
    Carbine matches are a sport.

Olympic target shooting isn't with an AR 15. But target shooting can be a sport. But it walks a fine line with training for practical skills just with an added competition to see who's better.
    Hunting isn't a sport, it's hunting.
    Banging steel is training.
Carbine matches can be a sport though.

nor does there have to be. while some of us don't make much of a name or label, there are those that do. if it doesn't hurt us to change the name to a more neutral one that can help our cause, why not?

it's obvious that the uninformed public bases their perceptions on labels, rather than facts, so i don't see changing labels as rolling over. to one who doesn't know the difference, 'assault rifle' is going to conjure up a more negative image than a 'modern sporting rifle'. even the label 'semi auto' can confuse some who think it means 'full auto'.

i don't give a shit what they call my rifle, as long as i can keep it. if you don't want your 'assault rifle' labeled as a 'sporting rifle', then so be it. i'm more concerned with keeping my rifle than its label.

But PDW has other meanings in the firearms community that does not refer to rifles or most carbines.

'Service Carbine' or 'Duty Carbine' gets my vote.

Just as we refer (however infrequently) to full-size handguns as 'duty' or 'service' handguns.

ETA: OR, we could follow semi-current military nomenclature and call them 'Individual Carbines'. :P
