    Doc - 12 GA Slugs?

    Doc,
In the stickied 12GA ammo recommendations thread, you recommend Brenneke Rottweil slugs. As far as I can tell, those aren't available anymore due to some QC issues. I found another thread where you mention that the Federal Tru-ball Deep Penetrator might be a suitable replacement. How do you feel about the newer Brenneke offerings:

    • Tactical Home Defense (THD)
    • Special Forces Short Magnum (SFM)
    • Classic Magnum (CLM)
    • Special Forces Maximum Barrier Penetration Magnum (SF_MBPM)
    Semper Paratus Certified AR15 Armorer

Not Doc, but I found the Tru-Ball penetrator slugs to be VERY inaccurate from my M1014 as well as from a friend's 590a1. With regular fosters and Brenneke, we shot fist-sized groups at a bit under 50 yards. With the Tru-Ball, those groups were dinner-plate sized. We shot them in the middle of our range-session, and before and after got good groups, but not during their use. I say this to point out that it wasn't fatigue at the end of the day that caused larger groups.

    Just an aside.

    Who said?

They are my standard slug in Alaska, and standard for most everyone else I know up here.

Rottweil loaded ammo with Brenneke made slugs, they are now imported by Brenneke USA http://www.brennekeusa.com/cms/h_home.html?&L=0

Not sure which exact Brenneke product you are referring to, but the Classic Magnum slug, which many folks in Alaska run, are labeled on the box as "made in Germany." Perhaps one of their other slugs?

The color of the packaging changed from green to this different design, but old and new production both suggests German manufacture. Here is a current production box:

If the loading, not just projectile, is done in Germany, it is likely OK.

If the OP is interested in the THD slug and how it performs, this PDF might be worth a look-

The LE 127RS are a soft lead, hollowpoint projectile which apparently expand/deform quickly with limited penetration.

The Brenneke Green Lightening Short Magnum is the same load as their SF load, which offers much deeper penetration. I carry both, selection based on application.

BTW, the Brennekes are more accurate out of my SG as well.
