    Offline Topo Maps

For those of us with a device that takes "apps", there's an app called "Offline Topo Maps" (for iOS at least) that allows you to DL a pretty detailed topographic map, as large as you want. You just highlight the region you want to have DL'ed and it stores in on your device. I stored the entire upstate Ny/ finger lakes region; came out to over 1gb!!

I think this could be much more convenient than paper maps during a shtf, so long as you have a way to keep your touchscreen device charged.

Does anyone know of any other apps with similar function? i.e. an offline satellite image app?

    Pretty cool app.

I'm a dedicated paper map guy though. Spent most of my early infantry time as a patrol navigator and then as a targeting guy later in my intel life so I'm really comfortable with my mapping/nav/route finding skills. I prefer to work on paper because it never runs out of batteries and doesn't shit the bed if I drop it.

Where can you get topo maps of your specific AO (or other AOs)?

Mytopo.com you can print custom topos at desired scale of pretty much anywhere. Really nice because if you want an area otherwise covered by multiple USGS quads, you can get it on just one map.

I recommend getting it overlayed with UTM/MGRS grids to make it easier to plot points and better determine where you are / where your goal is.

Never rely on Lat/Long for land navigation. You can even pull your grids and use them with your GPS to navigate.

I have the USMC Land Nav training manual as a pdf if anyone wants it, drop me a pm.

I get my maps in 1:24,000 scale with 1,000 meter UTM/MGRS grids.

This gives plenty of terrain detail and allows you to plot grids quickly and accurately for routes, etc.
