Bianchi Accumold(or it might be PatrolTek, I don't remember) vertical on off side 1 o'clock. I've tried having them horizontal strong side and off side, but on strong side their just slow and on the off side their extremely slow due to them hitting my Surefire and radio. Off duty it's either a single kydex magpouch 4 o'clock or stuck in pocket. Note to self, get or make a pocket mag pouch.

I'd like to carry my mags at 9:00 vertically, but I have my portable radio, OC spray, Surefire flashlight, PR24 ring (stick in the car), handcuffs and wireless mic transmitter in that location. Keys, gun, mag pouch and expandable baton are on the other side. Batman has nothing on me. David

Oh, you gave up on the collapsible baton too? About all I ever hit with mine was the doorframe when getting into the police car.

I like that flashlight holder. What is it? I have a SureFire 9P that fits great in the former baton holder but it falls out when upside down. There could be a better solution.
When life gives you lemons, insert copper and zinc wires in them and repeatedly shock your tongue.

Open top mag pouches work great until you are in a knock-down, drag-out fight. Yes, they are faster on the square range. Flapped mag carriers are the way to go for uniformed patrol.
Flapped mag carriers suck. We have a reload drill in our qual that I put in that is realistic and you will have a hard time making time with flaps. I personally carry a double open top magazine pouch on my support side (left side) that is vertical. 99% of LEO's in my state do the same. I also have a single covered (flapped magazine pouch further back on my belt in case I get into a knock down drag out and lose my primary mags. I strongly recommend against flaps. Vickers has the right idea with a double mag carrier that has one open and once flapped magazine.

For what it's worth, one Federal Agency recently conducted evaluations on the horizontal strong side versus the vertical weak side position for mag pouch placement. This was mainly due to inquiries from journeyman Agents as to why trainees and firearms instructors were mandated to carry their pouches horizontally while at the basic academy. Uniformity is required while at the basic academy, therefore testing was performed to decide on the preferred method. The test group included trainees of various backgrounds, shooting abilities, and sizes. The final outcome was that all shooters, regardless of skill level, performed faster emergency reloads, and more consistent reloads from the horizontal position.

The horizontal position is therefore, still required at the basic academy. I personally was surprised by the results and was previously planning to move my pouches vertically to make more room for increasingly more gear on my belt. I decided to keep my pouches horizontal. I have also found that it is a more natural position. From the bent elbow position, the left hand naturally flows to strong side horizontal position, very natural. Vertical position forces your left arm to move unnaturally high to remove the mags.

Also, just to clarify, at this agency we are required to have closed top mag pouches, although it is not strongly enforced in the field.

If horizontal carry was truly faster you would see IDPA and USPSA shooters using these type of pouches.

I am only reporting results of a non-scientific study that was meant for the benefit of one government agency. Neither I nor the agency have any bias either way, nor am I receiving any endorsements from the horizontal mag pouch coalition. Some people don't have the resources to conduct this type of study, therefore, I shared the results. If competition target shooters like a different style it has no impact on me. If you don't agree with the results you are still free to carry however you like, I will still attempt to sleep at night knowing people have a different opinion on the subject than my agency.
