I'm certainly not the expert, but I was in your spot a few months ago, only owning a 9mm given to me by father in law. I paid about 1.5 times the summer 2012 prices for a new colt 6929 and have slept very well since. Getting ammo and mags is a hassle, but It's coming along and I haven't paid crazy prices for those.(regular trips to dicks sporting goods has worked great) My two cents is that a national AW ban is least likely (I was more scared when I bought mine) but mag restrictions are only a matter of time. Ammo will be fine in due time. However I live in KY and feel just fine that nothing will happen on the state level...your state may be different with our dictator on the campaign trail. I think waiting a year could do wonders, but there is obvious risk that you may never get one...thus the conundrum. If you don't have a AR, you prob aren't familiar in what to buy and how to assemble, so just take the hit and buy one. The site below had one in stock this weekend, and while it's out of stock now on the website I personally talked to the guy and he has them in the warehouse but slowly releasing them to keep business on the up and up.

Not a deal, but I don't think 6920's will be found for under $1750 for a long time...so it depends on what it's worth to you.
Personally, I have developed a hobby that I can't get enough of...monetarily equivalent to a drug habit too! Regardless of when you buy the AR, you need to buy the mags now to be safe. It would be a shame if the ban went through in your state or the federal level and you had to throw the mags at the enemy as your defense. Check that site twice a day for the next couple weeks and I bet you find it in stock...make your decision from there.

The M&P has the edge because I am in favor of the Melonite barrel.

Can anyone give me their $0.02 on either of these two or possibly mention another one similar in MSRP that I may have not come across yet?

    Thanks again for the help!
    I'd skip anything DPMS.
Pre-december Colts and BCMs could be had for less than $1200.
Right now $1800 would be a good buy on either of those.

You can sign up for notifications on BCMs website.
Their 16" uppers run from $460 to around $1000 depending on what rail/forearm you wanted.
BCGs will run you about $300, unless you can get a deal or camp BCMs site when they come back in stock for $225.
Get a stripped lower. Sign up on Rainierarms.com to get notification when they come back in stock.
They just had Seekins Precision lowers for $180. I had one in my cart, but my computer crashed, so no luck for me. My work computer blows... still running XP
LPKs can be found at PSA frequently.
Not sure about their quality, but a lot of people have used them without too many issues.
Or wait for one of their lower build kits. About $200 there.
Lowers are fairly simple to put together. And there are tons of videos and pictures that detail how to put one together.
    So... $800 upper + $225 bcg + $180 lower + $200 lower build kit
that's $1400 give or take a little depending on what else you want to throw on there.

What sucks is the new normal will be adversely affected by the current prices

I'm afraid I'm on my way there now even before I have one of my own! That is what is making this tough for me, being on a budget and having fears of HF241 ban in MN a possibility. The past month, all I have been thinking about is getting a middle range starter so if anything does happen then I would at least have a chance at any sort of grandfathering. I have been buying magazines and spending free time at work doing google searches.

I'm in Canada where panic buying of rifles didn't start due to no new legislation however parts are drying up due to the increased sales volume in the US.

I have recently joined a shooting club in Vermont just south of me.
Since my 14.5" AR which is a Norinco cannot be brought south of the border I was in the market for a new AR.

I happened to find a Stag 3G for below MSRP and bought it. After purchasing it I went on the Stag website which states that orders are now more than a year behind.
messages such as these are now starting people north of the border panick buying due to fears that there will be no new AR's on the shelves in the coming year.

I wouldn't let fixed sights be a deal breaker. Sights are easily changed.

Daniel Defense M4V7, BCM Mid 16, LMT Standard and Colt 6720/6920 all had MSRPs within $100 or $200 of $1200 pre-craziness, but that doesn't mean anything right now. Hell even a Noveske Basic was ~$1400.

I think you can call and order a DD M4v7 right now Straight from DD for $1500 with a 2 month delivery time, but I'm not positive.

Of the two the S&W is by far the better rifle. But may I ask why you KNOW you don't want a fixed front sight base? There are valid reasons to go without, but a lot of new buyers don't know why they don't want it. It won't harm your ability to use any scope you please, it's by far the most durable, and can always be changed later, it's a lot harder to go the other direction.

I was under the assumption that the fixed sight was not easily removable and one would have to get a new barrel and gas system possibly.

You can just shave the top off to fit under a rail. Or you can install a new gas block.
