Nope. If you want to add a longer rail system down the road you can either take it off(takes a punch and a hammer) and have the barrel dimpled for a low profile gas block, or you can cut the top of it off and grind it down...which creates the strongest low profile gas block available...and one of the lowest profile.

With the advent of FSP type rails, you don't even have to do that to have a longer rail.

So are front fixed sights better? I thought that having a full pica tinny rail with collapsible sights would be just as consistent as fixed but giving the shooter the option to move or upgrade with ease instead of having to grab a hammer and/or dremel.

Better is subjective in this case. I am new too, but IMHO, it's better to just get the basic rifle and use it and then customize it based on need and experience. If you start with an FSB, it's easier to change it than it is to start with a lo pro and move to FSB.

As mentioned earlier ... read everything you can here. Don't waste your time on AR15.com or other sites ... this is the one you want to learn from. As long as you have the lowers and mags in hand, you can slowly build up a pretty damn nice rifle if you follow the guidance you find here.
Read all the sites. They can all offer something. Only fools would tell u where to look. You'll make your own decisions.

I get this is a much faster way of finding out the info then actually doing the searching on your own but a few of us telling you is a drop in the bucket compared to absolute well of knowledge on this site, USE THE ORANGE SEARCH BUTTON ON TOP OF WEBPAGE! its a google search engine and retard proof, but to answer your question...DPMS IS GARBAGE, smith and wesson is not bad but they certainly aren't on par with the best.

    COLT
    BCM
    NOVESKE
    DANIEL DEFENSE
    KNIGHTS ARMAMENT

any of these will probably exceed the needs of most shooters and in most cases their children as well. I'm not saying this to be a douche I'm providing input from someone who could have done better his first go around and had I just known to read I'd have been better and far cheaper off.

I KNOW I don't want piston nor fixed iron sights, that is why I was looking at the DPMS Recon and the M&P 15T and both were also offered at Cabela's pre-December. The M&P has the edge because I am in favor of the Melonite barrel.

Can anyone give me their $0.02 on either of these two or possibly mention another one similar in MSRP that I may have not come across yet?

    Thanks again for the help!

The trouble right now is even finding the parts you want to use to build a rifle. I have been sitting on the fence for literally years about building one and decided to jump in case any of the proposed legislation gained traction. I had to settle on a few things like a Spikes lower because it was the lower I could get, not really what I wanted. I paid too much for most things but in the end the rifle shoots really well (sub MOA) and does what I want in general. Now that it seems like the assault weapons ban is not going to gain traction (knock on wood) I would wait six to eight months as others have suggested and save yourself a lot of headache and money.

Not all the best parts, but just showing you can find almost everything in stock if you look. BCM upper receiver groups have been available at different places for hours at a time for two days in a row now at normal prices.

Add one of those and a BCG and there's your complete rifle.

From the perspective of one in New York:

Monitor your state legislation, but when making purchase decisions, I recommend erring on the side of "buy it now".

Anecdote: In New York, an individual was waiting to receive a large yearly bonus check before purchasing his first AR. The check was scheduled to hit his bank account on January 22nd. He does not, and will never, own an AR, because in less than 24 hours on January 15, his state legislature introduced and passed the NY SAFE ACT, effectively immediately, no guns for you too bad so sad.

I hate to advocate "panic buying", and I do not feel that a massive, overarching federal-level ban is imminent. But if you live in a state that leans towards the restrictive side on firearms laws, and you really want an AR, proceed accordingly.

Get your cash and gift cards and get to Cabelas and buy that S&W now. Yes the top tier rifles are of higher quality (components) but trying to find them are tough. Especially when you have those gift cards limiting you to a certain retailer.

Dont go nuts worrying about ful length rails and such. Just get the higher quality rifle. Of the two uou stated as available thats s&w. Good luck.
