DIY CNC has been around for a while and already allows materials like aluminum to be easily used.

I'd much rather a CNC setup than a 3D printer. At least with today's tech, all things considered.

Oh, and when it comes to mags, sheet metal work isn't rocket science.

What about heat treat and anodizing? Even most real manufacturers send out their parts for that.

Yah, you can DIY anodize, but it isn't that common. Heck, you can also DIY plating as well, although, again, it isn't that common.

That said, not sure I understand the point. An aluminum part, even un-treated, still beats a plastic part IMO. And I suspect the 3D printed plastic probably isn't best of breed either (say, compared to what Magpul uses).

I'm not saying the 3D printers aren't cool. I'm just saying if I was building firearms parts, it wouldn't be my tech of choice.

    +1.

but even then, I still wouldn't trust a printed BCG... much less a printed receiver or mag.

These components need to be made with durable and torture-tested materials. The only part that I would actually use is a 3D mag, everything else is speculation.
