Opinions Please on "high end" piston models: Christensen vs LWRC...

    Hello all,

I am a new to AR-15's and love the platform! I am looking for a piston driven model and have narrowed it down to either the LWRC M6A2 or the Christensen CA-15 Recon. Both 16" barrels and both chambered in 5.56/.223.

I live in NJ and both of these are legal and available (as much as "available" is these days). The LWRC is $2500.00 and the Christensen is $4500.00. Big difference in price but I have buyers for some other guns that are safe queens which can fund the Christensen, so price is not an issue right now.

My heart fell in love with the looks, and feel of the Christensen but my mind is telling me that I don't know enough about the brand. I do know that LWRC is excellent and will suit my needs (target/range/home defense).

Big question - with money not an object but assuming I can only have one, which would you choose ? Please factor in reliability, quality of components and built, fit and finish as well as looks, style and ergonomics.

    Thank you all in advance.

I have owned a few LWRCi guns in the past.

They're good guns, but they're not worth the $2k price tag at all, as they do nothing better than a good DI gas gun.

If you're new to ARs I'd recommend one of two things.

    A basic gun like a Colt 6920, DDM4, Centurion gun, or BCM4(mid).

Buy ammo, develop a skillset, and change the gun as needed.

    Or.

KAC SR-15 for around $1800, and is far superior in design to the LWRCi guns (or any GP gun on the American market at the minute) and just buy a sling, light, and learn to use it. You won't really have to worry about rails, ambi-controls, stock, or sights, or anything. As it's all there.

I don't recommend either AR-15 you're looking at, and it's very hard to justify $4500 on an AR. Especially when it's from a company that doesn't have as much experience as the companies I mentioned, nor do they produce them to a known spec. (That I know of.)

    I hope my advice helps.

(Other recommended products for a new guy. VTAC sling. Gear Sector Light Mounts. SureFire lights. Magpul PMAGS. Aimpoint RDS. Tango Down or Magpul pistol grips. BCM also makes a very good simple chest rig if you need one. For optic mounts: KAC, Bobro, Daniel Defence, and American Defense MFG.)

This. I wouldn't bother with the Piston Guns, better to spend your money on training.

If you're new to the AR, as others have said get a regular direct impingement model from a reputable manufacturer like Colt, LMT, Daniel Defense, BCM, Noveske, etc.

If you have your heart set on a piston AR, and cannot be discouraged from this path for any reason, get an HK MR556. It's the only truly proven piston AR. All the other ones including the two you are looking at are pretenders to the throne.

You don't want to take an LWRCi to a gunfight. Over priced GARBAGE!

You can brag about how much you spent on it.... but that's all the value you have.

Piston ARs don't belong in the defense category anyway.. So the enitre premise is doo doo.

I wish you had other in the pole.

I have a LWRCi its a malf-o-matic. Sent it back, nothing changed. The Christiansen does not interest me, nor do I take it that seriously.

To me if you want to pick between to "High end ARs" the choice is KAC or Noveske.

I have a KAC SR15 upper, it is very nice. I didn't liek the rail length so I put a DD risII on it, love it now.

I have a Noveske Barreled (SPR) Vltor mono upper. Love it, I have shot a 5 shot .63 moa group with it, not a 10 shot group but still I am pretty happy with it.

What are you looking for out of it?

Everything ^ he said and whatever you do, do not take advice from anyone on NJGunForums.
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

BTW the Christensen uses what looks remarkably like the Adams Arms Low Pro kit. You're paying for the barrel and the paint job with this rifle IMHO.

Everything else looks ok.. but, it's hard to tell from a few vids and a list of claims.
